Neutral , riding the brakes just a little so you don’t roll out of the paver.....
Nothing will piss a crew off more than rolling out of the paver . Leaving a big pile of material that has to be shoveled into the paver to continue.......
If there’s no bobcat it gets pretty hostile real fast.....
What's asphalt hauling like?

If you're paving find out which guy on the crew is giving the hand signals and watch him like a hawk.
I don't know how other places do it but around here it's usually the guy driving the paver. If he wants the box higher or lower, if you're holding too much brake or not enough, if he needs to stop...he'll be giving you signals.
Not all pavers use the same signals for the same things so on your first day try not to be the first truck. Get a ways back in the string so you can watch what's going on, get a clue as what the paver wants. and you should be alright. -
They don't like drunk truck drivers to back up on the new pavement to the screed instead of the hopper either. I thought I was seeing things in my mirror when that happened . lol
Asphalt is some of the best dump truck work, tandem or belly there is as far as I am concerned, just nice easy work and easy on the truck compared to lots of jobs. On the bellys puting it in a windrow, they usually have a dump man on the ground controlling the gate, so it is hard to mess up.
Hot oil is some great tanker work too as far as I am concerned, at least here it is, it never gets boring.Fold_Moiler Thanks this. -
I haul liquid asphalt from a terminal to the plant. A lot of times I start very early in the morning to have the first load at the mixing plant by 5-8 am, depending on what they are doing and what is already in the tanks.
There's different grades too: 58-28, 64-22, 64-28, 64E-28L, and of course there is emulsion and tack. I may also have to add silicon, ecosorb (cuts down on stink), zyco, sonnewarm, or evotherm. You may even have to add diesel fuel if your hauling a load of QPR cold patch.
It's very hot, so don't get any on you. It's easy to haul, load to seal, close up, and go to plant. Hook up hose, check for suction, and unload. Make sure you put it in the right tank of course, don't want to mix products or you will have some very angry people yelling at you.speedyk Thanks this. -
And always bring the plant operator lunch!!!
