    Show Me Shine,
Just the basics for a true Truck Stop. Plenty of parking, well lit lot, sit down restaurant, clean showers and most of all respect for drivers and it will come back to you 10 times over. Make it a Truck Stop and not a Travel Center or Stopping Center and they will come to you and spread the word.

It costs too much and is too hard to staff a traditional restaurant. They can have 3 different kinds of fast-food restaurants run by the same staff buffet style for much less cost. Say goodbye to service unless it's a place the locals will use to make it viable. I wouldn't be surprised if robots started running the places.....and then took our driving jobs.

The company I'm employed by does indeed set up fuel stops but who says one must park there. Mandatory parking at a fuel stop ? Its never been a rule. To me the fuel stops are set in place more like way points on a gps for a route. Nothing more.

I do head on down the road. I like mom and pop stops, there's usually parking however, some are pretty darn run down. Its not attractive

That must be why all the restaurants around the country are failing.

This comment and others here I hope are not made by people that are in their own trucks. It is about profit pure and simple.

How come a mom and pop has a sit down restaurant? Simple, they are not a giant corporation. They do not have shareholders that they have to answer to at their annual meetings. They can make as much or as little as they want. Don't think for one minute that these mom and pop places would not shut down their restaurant if it was not making a profit. Restaurants are VERY profitable if operated correctly.

They are closing these restaurants because of profits per square foot. They make more money off you buying chips and candy than they do cooking for you. They also make more from you with the casino you are throwing your money into.

It is the same reason that Pilot will have 6-8 registers but only 2 cashiers working.

Geeze people, educate yourself. I never went to college or anything like that but even I can figure stuff like this out.

I would pay double for a sit down restaurant meal than fast food meal anyday!

Mom & pop truck stops are shutting down their restaurants all over the place. Many of them are doing the same thing as the big boys, putting in Subway type restaurants. There are many reasons why but you can stick to yours. For as many drivers like me who buy from the truck stop where they park, I bet there are 5 to 10 as many who buy fuel somewhere else and use the facilities like a camping site. Many truck stop owners have complained about that. Like I said, if they can open a sports bar or really nice restaurant that the locals will patronize they have a much better chance of success. Also, being in an area where they can find good help means everything.....because of the nature of trucking, many of them are not and can not. I hear these same arguments all the time against what are basically business decisions and it sounds like grumpy old men yelling at squirrels .....by all means, do not patronize the greedy corporations if it bothers you that much. Maybe if everyone patronized the mom & pops they wouldn't all be going broke and closing the entrances with concrete barriers?
