What's it like transporting heavy equipment?

    @D.Tibbitt That landoll has four I-beams in it. Two in the center and one on each edge. I’m a day cab that weighs almost 40,000 empty. That should give you an idea how beefy that trailer is.

    Yep my landoll is rated for 50k lbs in ten feet. Even though it only has an overall capacity of 35 tons. It's a 930D. I believe chriskc's is rated for 40 tons, his is a 440 something I think. The trailer can probably handle a lot more than those 17.5" tires, I just feel so sorry for those things when I get heavy, I see them back there trying to hang in there. I always try to do my fancy wiggling while I'm empty. The times I've jacked it while heavy , well it's best to not look at those poor guys, lol.

    Okay, trivia for you:

    Looks like you loaded in Kernersville. If you wanted to have your drives and trailer axles to scale the same, how would you do it? One shot accuracy. It’s not critical with your load, but if you were going to do like @chriskc and run 5 axles at 95k, you have to be able to be precise.

    Every week or so, they have to offload these loads, run them through the truckstop parking lot to the eastbound I-10 service road, and go westbound, cross the interstate, and reload them back on the barge. One of the loads was near 70ft tall, according to the motorcycle cop. Big freakin load.

    In most cases it is not the roads into the site that require a trailer change but the maneuverability inside the compound. A SPMT can if properly operated turn circles within 125% of its own length while hydraulically keeping a load level and plumb on uneven terrain.
    In the move by Edwards the SPMT (or Goldhofer with add-drive) once inside the site at somewhere near 160 or 200 ft long, 16 or 17 ft wide and 23 ft high is much more maneuverable than 345 ft long, 19.5 ft wide and 19 ft high with a turning radius of 500 ft or more.
    They set up the gantry crane at a location about 8 miles from the site as what was probably the closest location accessible by the road trailer with the height change not being a factor. This also meant that the crane could be left up for the following 2 moves and would mean that the road trailer would be back to reload about a week sooner on each load.

    I understand completely about the lighter weight load on this digger. For future I would want it to be more balanced. You are correct its Kernersville the fella was kinda in a rush because there was three behind me waiting to load and a broke down fella in the RGN load area. I can understand his concern about possibly falling behind and just saying I'm good. A nice close even number on the drives and trailer. I have a fixed fifth wheel so my one shot is to move the hoe to the rear two feet. Putting the center of the hoe just in front of the middle of the tool box doors which is the center of the trailer.

    Ive seen 90k on a 2 axle landoll. 120psi in the tires and rims nearly into the tar. Boy did it look bad.


    What the fudge is that pile of ferrous matter?
