Some were mentioning in a buried thread that Wal-Mart US atlas is nice to have as well because it shows the locations of all Wal-marts in case you need supplies or want to park.

HAHA, a trainer with no atlas... so much for teaching students how to plan trips!

Gotta agree with the rest, Rand McNally Atlas, make sure it's the Motor Carriers one (which it should be, if in a truck stop.) And definitely get the laminated, lasts much better, and you can even use wax pencils on it then wipe it off later if you want.

Crabbys125 girl ditti on the MC Road Atlas, but I would hold off on the GPS. Garmin has one for trucks and last time I checked it was bascially $500.

The large print version has a coating but it is not laminated. The laminated one is less money as well, but if you are continually losing your readers or in low light, you might want to pick up a large print version. I have one of those, so far, it has survived.

On trip planning, look up the US map at the beginning of the state maps, this will give you an idea of the overall route to take, and bear in mind, any road on that map is decent, compared to other roads in the area that are truck routes.

Once you get used to a route, you don't use an atlas as much, but if you run all over, you will use it often.

Pick up a non laminated version every year for route, low clearance, and coop changes, otherwise, you may be surprised sometime with a new coop, often, Prepass isn't there yet, either, and you run the risk of missing one and getting chased down if you aren't paying attention and watching for it. Sometimes, truck routes get removed or restricted. Watch the truck stops for deals as the new ones are getting released in the summer.

I used magnifying glass, tried bifocal contacs, don't like those.

Lighted magnifying glass? Anyway, I tried Street and Trips and DeLorme, and the usual things Google, Mapquest, etc.

I have found getting directions to be hit and miss no matter how you do it, the best way for a driver is to get directions from someone that has actually been there in a big truck; that is 13 and a half feet tall with a trailer the same length as you are pulling.

The steps I pull have a roof built on them to hang tarps from, same rules apply because they are just as tall.:biggrin_2554: Wish I could dump the front axle of those spreads, there is a lot of swing when you dump the rear axle.

I also did refrigerated and van in Chicagoland, but it has been 10 months since I was there.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I will mention all this to the bf.
I have to correct myself as well. I talked to the bf last night because I also was worried about a trainer without an atlas but bf thinks that the trainer DOES have an atlas but the trainer was asking my bf if he had an atlas so he can prep. the route they were going to do that morning (this morning).
Bf didn't have an atlas but did have his laptop and used the internet to plan the route.
I don't know when the bf will be back - everything is so up in the air - I plan to buy the Rand one and maybe the Walmart one too if he doesn't pick an atlas up somewhere along the road.
    Thanks again everyone!

Watch for sales. The 2010 Atlases should be coming out soon, so you might be able to get the 2009 Atlas at a discount.

Found it on a website somewhere in the deep, dark back roads of the internet that people rarely trod. I honestly have no idea, had it on my computers for ages.

The scene itself is from the movie, "The Dark Crystal," one of my favorite movies from when I was younger.

And now I totally blew my image as a tough-as-nails truck driver. :biggrin_25523:
