I would take the route okie layed out for you however an alternate would le as follows. 90 to rapid city. 79 to 18. 18 to 85. 85 to 20 in lusk Wyoming. 20 to 25 north. 25 to wy 220. 220 to 287. 287 to 80 West. 80 to Utah exit 146. Take 40 to the stoplight. Can't remember road number but its marked. Take that over to 15 then 15 to Vegas. Still have mountains but not as severe plus if its warm enough the college gals at Brigham young may capture your attention. Easy route but not the most direct. Keeps you off of parleys summit but seriously your bobtailing. You will be fine over on 70.

That's the way I'd go. Done it before with a full load and is much better than going anywhere near the Colorado Rockies. And with just a tractor, he can take Heber Canyon as you mentioned to shave off even more.
