Situational awareness is the best of course. You can pick out 90% of violent or dangerous types from 100 yards or more. Avoiding them entirely is best but at least be aware. The other 10% takes a bit more awareness to pick out. Generally, they take up or "claim" more space than a normal person, they might stand in a doorway not caring or intentionally impeding the flow of people. Pacing or moving around a lot or waving their arms a lot is an indicator of someone "claiming territory". You can drastically reduce your chances of becoming an unwitting victim of violent crime.
