Here is the deal. I have been in the road construction business since I got out of high school. Right now the future looks pretty dim for my line of work in my area. Trucking is not my first choice of career changes but I am just trying to be pro-active and explore my opportunities if I was to lose my job. I have a class A CDL with tanker and a current medical card. My driving experience has mostly been straight rigs (dump trucks and water trucks mainly) and a little bit of lowboy. I am an equipment operator but have drove trucks off and on as they needed me to since I was about 22 years old (about 15 years). I live in northwest Florida about 5 miles off I-10. My question is; Is there a job market out there for someone like me without having to spend a fortune on refresher courses or schooling? Thanks in advance for your help.
Whats the job market like out there?

I've been keeping an eye out, as I'm starting school tomorrow. Right now is a slow time of year where I'm at, and I'm still seeing a few jobs pop up here and there. I don't know anything about Florida though.
Keep in mind when you get answers here, most of the discussion is about OTR and big rigs, so you'll get answers that reflect that. There are other driving jobs you may consider - sounds like you've already had some of those!
Personally, I'd be happy to drive a dump and go home every night, rather than go OTR.
Good luck! -
Check into rock/sand hauling up there. You may also want to consider looking into heavy equipment hauling or something to that effect. Good luck man!
