According to studies done by the association of civil engineers, most major metropolitan areas have an average speed between 23 to 28 mph. That’s places like Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago and others of the like.

Avg moving speed on Garmin is a separate metric, compare to avg speed I'm using (distance travelled / engine hours). I believe Garmin's avg moving speed doesn't include any stops, and I'm not sure about the sensitivity of auto-pause feature (which stops the time when stationary), but if it kicks in very quickly, even time spent for a brief stop at a red light would be excluded from denominator (moving time). As such, your actual travel time will be longer than garmin's moving time.

    That’s your one day average?
What’s your log tell you? I can show daily logs where my avg is close to 70 mph.

Why would a gps be suspect in your mind?

So If I run across NE an WY and log 740 miles in 11 hours my moving average isn’t 67.27 for the day? This is simple data from my elog. I suppose it would be even higher but the elog doesn’t take me off driving when I stop at red lights or stuck in traffic..

That's a single data point, while I'm trying to look for average for the entire lifespan of vehicle. I'm sure that your total distance travelled on your log / total time spent driving on your log would be lower than that.

GPS is highly accurate but some are going to dismiss it now because I don’t stop and pee enough :)

A solar powered driver is going to avg less. Someone running CA or the North East consistently is going to average a lot less.

Maybe you should have directed this topic towards daytime drivers. The ones who fight traffic all day long.

Did you click on the attachment? It's self explanatory. That's my whole week from this past Saturday. It looks about the same every week. That's all from the truck ECM. Leaving the yard at 15mph drags down average speed. Redlights. Hills, and mountain grades do the same. A true rolling average doesn't start when you're on the open highway.

Out west I can average 60mph or better every single day of the week if I don't cross into California..
Most weeks I'm 3500 miles in 6 days with 10 or so hours left on the 70

Depending on how you have the Garmin set up is the factor. Mine shows both a moving and overall average. My moving averages are much higher than the overall averages.

I'm a nightshift driver and don't see any traffic at all on a whole 12 hour shift.
