it is rather annoying listening to it when i accelerate, motor was inframed 20k miles ago had an issue early on (missing plug for air under the head) making lots of black smoke, changed turbo (reman) and still ran the same until finding said plug, then got more power but still blowing black smoke like a chimney, this sound was only happening at the high end 1600rpm+ louder as the rpm climbs.
6 months later found out actuator wasn't getting air, fixed that and now i get this, in the low gears, it sounds normal and around 4/5th gear the noise starts up, following a rush of air escaping from the sound of it. no smoke and no codes, egr is blocked as well.
What's this sound 04' Cummins ISX turbo related.

Exhaust gasket between the turbo and exhaust manifold flange, or the gasket between the EGR cooler and EGR valve. You will see carbon stains in the area. The sound could also be from an air to air hose, so check all your air to air clamps.
losttrucker Thanks this. -
P.S. Thanks for making a video, that really helps!

no problem, do you think the turbo could be damaged from running without working actuator for half a year? volvo tech said turbo was okay despite running high egts due to the missing plug for about a month 3-4000 local miles, mentioned a couple small leaks (probably pinhole sized) what stumps me tho i don't hear it bobtailing, exhaust manifold gaskets to block are okay, to turbo I can't get a good view even tho the woosh comes from the right side or at least sounds like it

The turbo would have failed by now, so I don't think it would be damaged, but I don't recommend leaving it like that. Your truck doesn't create enough boost for long enough when bob tailing. You need high boost for a sustained period to get the noise to happen. With either blown out gaskets, or leaking air to air hoses, they vibrate like a reed in a trumpet to make the noise.

thank you so much Heavyd! will try to post back if I have any issues after that

You're hitting the jump button too late and Mario is burning his buns on the exhaust manifold.

CAC hose has a pin hole in it!!
I just went thru that last month; same noise and everything! It sounded like I was a choo choo train lolmarek4792 Thanks this. -
Got a code SID 27 electrical fault active
MID 128 SID27 FMI 3 No air going to actuator again.. I unplugged green cable and still have same code maybe a bad vgt sensor or a short in the harness?
