No, you are correct here.....after this week I doubt this administration will get anything else done by 2016. They will be kept busy trying to stay out of prison. I would say we are safe for another 5 years. "I Love Gridlock"

 

Well, there are no "standards" or regulations yet. All of this "what if" will come to a close in a couple of years is my guess. Ann Ferro of FMCSA was speaking the other day and made it quite clear that the EOBR, ELD, Elog, or log name du jour mandate proposal will be out this October, with deadline to meet it the start of 2016. Gives folks plenty of time to figure out what they are going to do to trick the systems. No use letting you panties get stained yet. One can bet that any and all demands of what data the device has to record will be in the regs. For those that have mechanical engines, you can bet that there will be a mandate for a GPS type of device to be permanently mounted on the truck and in some way recording when the truck physically moved. Not that hard or costly to do. Speed, miles traveled, etc can all be done thru that GPS device. If I can do it on a smartphone, putting a device on a truck to do it is peaches and cream.

 

I know the Xata (now XRS) units just plug in with a union that connects to the plug where the diagnostic tool plugs in .

While there is no mandate yet I know of a few carriers that did poorly in an audit and were " strongly persuaded " by FMCSA to install EOBR's .

 

The "key word" here is "proposal"......that's all it is, a proposal. It still has to be refined an go through a whole array of procedures and funding votes before getting included in a final bill. It's good to have goals.....it's also good to have courts, heck sometimes it's even good to have lawyers!!

 

I'll agree with you there, no reason to fire someone just because something went wrong. Actually no reason to change anything either, unless a blatant disregard for "safety" is happening. When that happens the change should affect the offender only and not a group. If a company is found to be pushing it's drivers I feel it would be better to monitor for a period of time, through random inspections, and punish the offenders. If a driver(s) is the offender then the driver should be punished, assuming the company actually tried to discipline the diver. If there was a lack of oversight and follow through than the company should also be held accountable. I'm full of crazy ideas, when I'm sleep deprived I think I could be a politician and write legislation!

 

That would be a pain in the rear. I have monitoring equipment plugged in there already.

 

Our trucks used some type of Y connector with 2 female ends so the diagnostic plug was still accessible without unplugging the EOBR .
