What's up with all the trucks idling?

I spent less then 150 nights in the truck last year, I actually love my bunk heater for winter, but I still have to idle the truck for an hour or two to recharge batteries before going to sleep.

I do have the gen/ac set up, was a pain, but I more hate the truck actually idling then the fuel cost. If it was just a nap, I’d just bump the idle and run the truck instead of setting it all up,

if I had an emissions truck I would probably do a little more research on an apu, but the last one I had on a company truck was dog ####, also my reefer burns about a gallon of fuel an hour as well when it’s running, which is a smaller engine then the truck, so an apu isn’t really going to be all that much better, especially if it’s running more like for AC, even at 200 nights a year, saving a quarter of a gallon of fuel an hour (if even that) will take years to even come close to breaking even on, more then likely the apu will be scrap by then

But you said the key word. You do it while your truck is off. You are not sitting there idling for hours and hours and hours at a time like the trucks that I see everywhere doing that.

As far as how I pose my questions, I can't think that I'm only right because it certainly sounds like you're right in what you're doing. That makes complete and total sense and it's probably one of the most intelligent responses that has been given in this thread. Bunk heaters and inverters are a great option.

If someone tells me that they have to idle because they can't afford an APU then I will tell them what I did because I think that's a great option to idling if they do not want to. If they want to spend money idling and put wear on their truck that's their business. And how you are set up is a great option also absolutely. Perhaps there are others.

And none of this is about right or wrong. Here's the very first post that I made when I started this thread because I think the point has gotten lost by the RESPONSES.

I don't see myself beating my chest telling everyone they're wrong. From that post I have people telling me to mind my own business and who do I think I am and why are you so upset about it. I have said no such thing. It is simply an observation. It does not seem to make a lot of sense when you see so many trucks just sitting and idling, sometimes for days at a time.

My intent is not to make anyone look foolish. There are other ways to achieve the same outcome just like what you've done.

But if someone feels foolish because the process of factual mathematics makes them look foolish or makes them feel foolish I'm not responsible for that.

i was comparing an apu to the amount of fuel a truck burns. the only way you get ahead with an apu is after 5 years or so. and thats if it doesnt have a major breakdown... not everyone has the same business plan. i have an emissions motor and i still idle more than most people, because its my #### truck and i will do what i want with it.

I’m idling right now. How else can I keep my chicken lights on all night without killing my batteries?

you are right, he comes off like some drivers that are found in flatbed constantly. they know everything there is to know and if you dont do it their way, you're wrong !

I have a pretty decent generator setup, and I've been sitting here idling all weekend, lol. I like the engine to stay warm. I'm thinking I might just run the generator during the Summer.

Honda 3000 Handi. Not a fan. If you want a Honda, get the other 3000 watt one. It has 26hr run time, and you can put remote start on it. Then if you rig up a remote tank, you could potentially fill up once every ten days or so, and start it from the comfort of your bed.

good info. do you have a gas one ? how much of a pain is it to lug around fuel cans? i was looking at some diesel generators so i could just plumb it off the tanks but the prices are a little bit much

I'd be interested to see you show me where I said that.

What I did say is if you don't want an APU you can get a generator.

Interesting, I think I suggested that if you don't want to run an APU and you don't want to idle getting a generator would be a good idea.

So you follow my advice but somehow you don't like me saying that.

    Interesting.

And if you like, feel free to quote me where I said you have to do what I do or you're wrong.
