Different people find different temps comfortable, so the outside temperature is irrelevant. Somebody from Florida and somebody from North Dakota have very different temperature preferences.
Personally, it needs to be below 55f when I go to bed for me to shut off my engine or I'm idling with the AC on and set to max. I normally go to bed around 6-7pm so outside of winter the sun is still heating the cab, plus my fridge and chest freezer act like small space heaters making the inside 10-15 degrees warmer then outside. If I'm parked in a rest area with parallel parking it can be in the 60s for me to shut off my engine since I'll have the windows open.
Flip side, my bunk heater doesn't go on unless it's getting below 30f. But below 20f it's good to idle again.
Stupid for me to not have an APU. Hopefully this year.Badmon, shooter19802003 and JoeyJunk Thank this. -
When you have a Hirail truck on the tracks, rule #1 with csx is to never turn it off if it’s on the main or siding. Pull in to a spur and shut it off all ya want.
I remember Pops 78 A model Kenworth idling during the night in Connecticut and sometimes Massachusetts during the winter. And I’m still idling, at least when there’s snow in the ground lol….D.Tibbitt, Tall Mike and shooter19802003 Thank this. -
Truck is parked behind the house. I'm inside enjoying all of the modern comforts most of us enjoy in our homes. Thermostat set just right, a plate of smoked salmon on my desk with a glass of wine to wash it down. Clean shower to enjoy before I head into the king size bed to have a good night's sleep with my fantastically awesome wife.
This thread has inspired me to go out and fire up my truck and let it idle for the next few hours.
Think other's have said it-- It's still somewhat of a a free country for now so if I want to burn my dollar bills via internal combustion engine, that's what I'm going to do. Don't like it? Pay my bills for me and I may consider letting you have a say (or idiotic opinion) on the matter.Oxbow, Brettj3876, Tall Mike and 2 others Thank this. -

Some of these responses are quite entertaining.
But it is a very obvious question. In 2022, you aren't stopping at truck stops to call the broker, and you aren't getting out of your chair to manually change the channel on your 300 lb tube powered television with 3 channels plus uhf.
Idling in 2022 is about the same. In some situations for some people maybe, but with the availability of generators and APUs, and for how bad it is on the engines to idle and how expensive emissions systems are to repair, and the fact that many parts are even back ordered, it just doesn't seem to make alot of sense.
And when you add in rising fuel prices, it makes even less sense. -
In seriousness I never sit long enough to set up camp. At most is 3 to 4 hours a couple times a week. I may sit parked all night maybe 3 times a month. I can’t see the extra expense, trouble of setting it all up and chasing gasoline worth it if I go the generator route. The APU is a little handier but used is a crap shoot and new well again ROI.
