hello everyone I am looking for advice I am a o/o looking to buy a freightliner Cascadia don't know what year but surely not a new one. I been driving a 1995 peterbilt 379 with a c12 marvelous truck. but the old girl cant keep running with all these emission standards coming from California now in new York ports. I am at a lost hearing these nightmarish story about the dd15 and the rest of these supposedly clean engine trucks. I would like to hear from you guys what truck is still worth getting that can meet 2007 emission standards or is going to be the roll of the dice when purchasing from here on out.

Not that my word is gospel , but it seems all of these emission engines , ESPECIALLY those requiring DEF start having problems around 400k miles.

That's been my perception of the new motors. The 07ish power plants without DEF that regen don't seem to have as many problems , but they're not like the pre- emissions engines.

The intro of DEF was a monkey wrench IMO.

I'm sure there have been many that have had lots of success with the new motors... perhaps they'll weigh in and guide you better than i.

New York ports now? It was stupid to allow other states the option to adopt CARB standards since none of them have the climate conditions that helped aggravate the smog problem.

The newer trucks, 13,14 and 15 have fewer problems with emissions as long as you get the exhaust filter cleaned every year or so. Costs about 900.00, I have been told. Fuel mileage is up, so that helps too, but the cost is not cheap. Lease or a rental may be the way to go, then the lessor should be on the hook for the repairs. Look at both ways before you make a decision.

New trucks come with full warranties and aren't breaking down as much as they used too.

I'm just about to hit 100k and the only shop time has been oil changes.

My last truck was a 12 and it wasn't bad untill the 350k mark. Repairs were on weekend hometime though. The only serious breakdown was when the injector cups went out and leaked fuel in to the antifreeze. That was 7 days down that should have only been 2. The truck sat outside more then inside getting fixed.

I'm looking at around 500k truck since my budget is 60k. my runs are short maybe 800 miles a month or 15k a year. mostly going to be idling I don't know how much that would play out on the EGR system. i see a lot of on the road drivers putting 120k a year i probably wont put that much in 5 years. i am thinking of having a strong one year warranty and having 10k besides that for the unexpected .

Idling doesn't have an effect on the egr i don't think. The problems are the dpf.

When i have to idle for a 10, the light comes on around the 9th hour and requires a regen. Takes about 10 minutes. If i'm still idling, the second light comes on around 5 hours and takes 30 minutes to regen. I'd hate to see what happens after that if someone were to idle a full 34. But if you do some driving. It resets the timer.

    That's in a 16 FL. With a DD15
