Dunno. Might just be for simplicity sake.

If you’re talking about a truck and pup vs semi dump trailer, truck and pups can get into places semis can’t. If the job is real right or the haul is short just run the truck and leave the pup at the shop.

As for the pivoting draw bar vs the fixed I think it comes down to cost and simplicity. In the Midwest I’m not sure I’ve ever seen/noticed a pup on a turntable, they are all fixed. Much easier to back up too, on less pivot point.

We run pivotal turntables on our pups. Better off tracking and harder to back up. And that's how you get job security. :D

An interesting twist on a truck and pup is the transfer dump, or the “slam bang”. A standard dump truck pulling a trailer with a slightly smaller dump body on rails. Arrive at the job, drop the trailer, dump the truck, come back to the trailer and slide the transfer body into the bed of the truck and then dump that. High payload of a semi dump but the maneuverability of a 10 wheel dump truck. Rarely see them any where but out west. 470A402B-F2CD-4633-80CF-2D5B76129596.jpeg To make it relevant to this thread here’s a triple transfer dump. Long tongues to meet the outer bridge requirement I would assume. 3C153018-C95B-44D8-B09A-E62F1481D7F5.jpeg

That's right kylefitzy. That second trailer is a little top heavy when you dump it inside the other box. Gotta be level & flat to transfer. Both thos transfers haul the same weight unless their in 2 different states.
