What is with all the short CHEAP paying freight? I dont mind short freight, in fact, I love it as long as it pays reasonable. I have a contact that gets me loads that pay awesome. But, I look at the load board and see these brokers that list loads that go 200 miles for $400?Thats rediculous, I dont see how these carriers can afford to take loads paying that cheap everyday and still have money left over at the end of the month. $400 a day just dont cut it. I need a minimum of $700 per day for each day my truck is not sitting in my yard.
What's with all the short freight?

It didnt meet my $700 limit, that is a per day limit, who says you can get loaded then go 200 miles and unload, then turn around and reload the SAME day. That wouldnt be bad if it worked out like that but most of the time when you load short freight like that you sit 2 hours waiting to get loaded. The chances of you getting two loads a day is slim to none. -
Exactly, the whole day wasted fro a "shorty"

The Big company make money only when the truck make $50 al Day clean, this is $1500 in 1 month,x maybe 4000 trucks ,this is 6 millions in 1 month, you have to see the big picture for this peoples

I hauled one 123 miles for $415 a few days ago. I guess it was sort of a mistake, I think I could have gotten more out of it. After hearing rates of $1.20-$1.40 thrown at me on longer hauls all day I guess it sounded pretty good to put a few easy bucks in my pocket. (van load) It was quick on and off, I netted $212.56 in about 5 hours. Nothing to brag about, but being totally honest I've hauled some longer loads recently that didn't net much more than that and still had time to reload the same day. Don't know what to think about shorties, they should pay more but whatever options are on the table at the time I guess.

Had my driver in MI last week and saw loads posted for 60 miles for $180. Had to call (normally stay out of it) and the broker said "that is $3/mile".
Me: "Are you new at this? Most trucks have a minimum per day."
Broker: (clearly sounding insulted) "Not new at all. I have been doing this for almost a year."
I harp on how contract freight drives rates. In that area, contracts for flats average $600-$800/day minimum. -

I've been doing it for 2 years now so that I can spend some time with my new grandbabies. Been making a good living at all these shorties here in central Ohio. You just need to learn how to set them up right. Set up loads ahead and some pay well enough to D/H back to get another. But $2 p/m? I would pass on that. Too cheap of freight. Like they say..."Just say NO to cheap freight". Dont make yourself a target. Be safe out there drivers.
Jimmbuds and rollin coal Thank this.
