I dont get it. This is a CB forum, yet there are a ton of hams on here busting the chops of drivers! We are spoken to as if we are inferior, ignorant, and utterly useless! BTW At some point, your little HAM radio arrived at the store/shop/dealer via TRUCK!
First off let me be clear about this, the frequencies that are purchased by the HAMS, does in fact give them exclusive rights. Not because they passed a test that I have no interest in taking, not because the FFC says it is theirs, simply because those bands were purchased with THEIR money, and I have not paid the same dues to operate on those frequencies. Therefore, operating on those frequencies would be stealing from those that paid for the use of them. Ok, now that I have made my point clear on that let me move on
The attacks on truckers by the high & mighty strictly law abiding HAM, does absolutely nothing for your cause of educating nor does it make a CBer want to obtain a HAM license/ticket or whatever you want to call it. In some cases it is doing exactly the opposite! Collectively I have spent days reading through the CB forum looking for information. In many of the posts I have seen truckers post that they [now] have every intention of jumping onto the 10m Band and raise hell for a second. Whether they do that or not is up to them paying the massive fine or having my equipment confiscated is enough to keep me away.
Where do some of you guys get off talking down to us (drivers) like we are nothing more than ignorant outlaws running the interstates mindless and equally worthless? Really? You act as if you are actually employed by the FCC to patrol and police ALL frequencies! Ive read through the rules and regs and have yet to find anything that states it is the duty of a HAM to find and report violators! Yet some of you guys, feel obligated to hunt down those running with illegal radios/exports and report them! Seriously did your parents not play with you enough when you were children or do you simply have nothing better to do with your lives then to find, harass, and cause problems for drivers running on anything more then 4 watts? There is one person on this forum that ALWAYS has to put in his 2 cents no matter the subject. And to be honest GADFLY, you and a few of your hammy buddies have been a major factor in my decision NOT to go for my papers! If even a fraction of the HAM society is anything like you or your close posting buddies, then I want absolutely nothing to do with it.[ham radio] Your wealth of knowledge would be better served giving advise then ripping apart people with opinions and ideas that differ from your own! So you have a license. Id call it more of a receipt then anything you paid for those frequencies Heres your receipt uuummm we mean license. And for an added bonus for paying a tax on something that should be free to begin with, were going to give you a special name, a call sign. Here you go, now you can tell everyone how very special you really are Im sure that statement alone will open up a HUGE can of worms but whatever Im entitled to my opinion as well, right? Or wait a minute; Am I entitled to my own opinion in the world of radio? I havent passed a test to prove I am intelligent enough to have my own opinion!
Outlaw by definition anyone that intentionally and/or continuously breaks the law. Many of you like to call us outlaws, which is actually quite funny, and depending on whom the intended insult is coming from, can be somewhat flattering. At least the label separates our kind from yours. Thats all Im going to say about that
I also get a kick out of how you guys (mostly the HAMS) like to poke fun at the way some of us (truckers) may or may not talk. Ex. That thar reedio gots lots of extreee channels . So, which is it, do you think that we are all just really freakn backwood hillbillys or are we just so retarded and uneducated that we (drivers as a whole) just never got a good grasp on the English language? You really have no idea how narrow minded this makes you sound when you try belittling truckers by the way they talk. Again, just another example of HAMS thinking they are better than a trucker!
Now on to the big radios or radios with lotsa pawha as some of you guys so ignorantly say. I run several ILLIGAL radios, depending on which truck Im in, where Im going, how long Im going to be out, etc. I LOVE my Connex 3300, Connex 4600 Turbo, and Magnum S9, all of which are exports and according to the FCC standards, highly illegal. Obviously any of the 3 will do well over 100w. So what the wattage I run is illegal (Im an outlaw remember) I NEVER EVER stray into the 10m band or any other frequency that I have no right being on I ALWAYS run on the high end of the 11m band. I have neither intention nor interest in getting into anything other than the designated 11m Citizens Band. After all, that is the only band of which I have a right to be a part of right? So why, why do you guys [hams] care what kind of power Im running on the 11m band? If my equipment isnt splattering across 39 channels, interfering with your stations, the neighbors TV, or Billy Bobs toaster just off I-78, then why do you guys, or anyone else for that matter care WT% I do??? You feel the need to play the role of highway hall monitor and report those with exports WHY??? Does it make you feel like a bigger man to go rat out someone that has nothing to do with you or your life? Were you one of the kids back in grade school that just wanted that orange vest SO BAD that you could taste it, that badge that allowed you to help kids cross the street safely at the bus stop, but was never given such a responsibility because you were always far to immature to be trusted? Really, what makes that sense of Im telling on you tick in you guys??? Personally, I think its quite pathetic and nothing more than a need for attention, all the while hoping that the policeman/agent that you could never be, the one that you are on the phone playing tattle tale with, would recognize you as an associate or one of their own. Truly sad to be such an outcast that you feel obligated to go pointing your little finger at others that walk just to the left of the right side of Johnny Law!
So what is my point with this post? HAMS ARE NOT radio police and no one respects you anymore for thinking that you are. HAMS have NO RIGHT to speak down upon truckers as if they are a lower life form! After all, we brought you the monitor your looking at this very moment, the keyboard you will use to respond to this post, even the true HAM radio and mic you will use later tonight to talk to your never-seen-face-to-face friends! Hams have NO RIGHT telling me or anything other driver what we can or cannot do thats what laws were written for, some choose to abide, some simply do not. And the point that most drivers without a ham license want and try to make .just because you have a sheet of paper that you paid the government to give you, doesnt mean that you are any better, more intelligent, or any more competent then the rest of us! Its a test, guys! You passed it, got a receipt to prove it! BIG DEAL! I have a concealed weapon carry permit in VA, WV, TN, KY, GA, AL, TX, NC, and SC, but that doesnt mean I am smarter than the dumb redneck that just likes to shoot pistols in his backyard! I have a CDL with the tanker, doubles & triples, and hazmat endorsements. When I got my CDLs I took ALL of the tests at the same time. (General Knowledge, Air brakes, Combinations, Tankers, Doubles/Triples, and Hazmat) I spent the better part of 5 hours in the DMV taking those test and at the end of the day I had done 3 things that the manager claimed to have never seen in her 23 years of service -- 1) Take ALL of the test the same day, back to back. 2.) Pass ALL of test on the first try 3.) Missed only ONE SINGLE question out of all of the tests combined!!!! I know that may sound hard to believe for those that have taken these tests but on the honor of my 3 precious children, that is the Gods honest truth. (it helps to have a photographic memory when it comes to words and numbers) MY POINT???? PASSING THOSE TESTS, WITHOUT MISTAKE, ON MY FIRST SHOT, DOES NOT MAKE ME A BETTER DRIVER THEN THE GUY THAT HAD TO TAKE EACH TEST TWICE!!! Same with you guys just because you took a test that qualifies you to operate on thousands of frequencies that others cannot, DOES NOT make you any better than those that do not have that same privilege! It doesnt mean that those without a license cant get one, or they are to ignorant to do get one, or that the ability required to operate a true ham radio is non-existent in those without it It simply means they either have no interest in HAM or have not bothered taking the time to take the test. Much like you have not bother to take the time to test for a CDL permit (different then an actual license) Its not that you couldnt pass the test(s), its simply that you dont care to!!!
In short, lay off the insults, the belittling of drivers, the talk-downs to CBers You accomplish nothing more than making yourself less attractive as a decent person!
So go ahead, let the endless, insulting, self-righteous post begin! Im sure the better part of my post here, as well as post before now, will be picked apart and over-analyzed, to find the slightest contradiction that might discredit MY God given right to MY OWN opinion!
What's wrong with you guys??? Hams!

Geeeeese thats was long winded but have to agree the way i see it is I payed for my CBs just like the ham operators did so Ill be on it when I please
-
I'm a ham and a trucker....so I guess I'm doubly screwed? Stay out if 10 meter and don't bleed over into it and I have no issues with you. I will say I can't stand the cb's with the echo and roger beeps, easily fixed though, I turn the radio down or off.
BTW...it's CDL, not CDL's....you only get to have the one unless you truly are an outlaw and have more then one drivers license.delta5 Thanks this. -
No frequency of any service is purchased! Doesn't matter whether it is Ham, CB, MURS, FRS, GMRS, commercial broadcast, military or government. Frequencies are assigned by service by the FCC which are sometimes effected by rulings by international radio ruling groups. Frequencies can also be taken away, like part of the 220mhz band for hams several years ago, or the frequencies left vacant by the mandatory switch to digital TV. The only thing purchased is a license to operate on those frequencies, for some classes of licenses.

Well, I agree that the initial message was very long, and I only scanned it. It seems to me Mr Longshot 34 used a very broad brush to tar all ham operators. That makes me question the credibility of the author, and I lose interest in the post. I'm a HAM and CBer too, and I enjoy chatting to truckers when I'm on a long road trip out there as much as I enjoy the traffic in HAM radio. And don't kid yourself .. we HAMs have our own lingo as well. It's part of the coursework to get the license. 73s.

Longshot,
Thank you for the well thought out post. It's obvious some of us have been doing things that annoy you. You probably noted my reply to one ham about his "policing" recently, so it bugs a lot of us, too.
I've been a CBer almost as long as I've been a ham, and I've had two careers: public safety, and commercial two-way radio repair.
When truckers leave my shop after a tune-up and/or repair, I usually hear back, because they come in again for work on other radios, or to buy accessories on following trips through. Sometimes it's just to say "Thanks" for making their stuff sound good on the air.
Aside from frequencies available, the only difference between CB and amateur radio is that you have to show some degree of technical proficiency to pass the ham exams.
I've got friends who are local to me that are fantastic technicians with all manner of CB gear, including multi-kilowatt amplifiers. Several design and build their own amps. We send each other parts when we're in a bind, and help each other troubleshoot radios and amps with odd problems.
Most of them are not hams; all are CBers. Nearly all of them are better on a lot of stuff than I am.
My only CDL experience was one year in school buses after I got out of public safety; I wanted to see "kids being kids" instead of patients, victims, or suspects. Before that all my paid truck driving experience was on fire pumpers and ladder trucks.
All the rigs had CBs in them, and it was the locals and truckers who often helped guide us to emergency scenes.
This is actually the first place I've ever seen any of the bickering and lecturing between the two services. Maybe it's cuz of my somewhat sheltered professional life in the US's Pacific Northwest, where everyone had to depend on one another.
I live right closeby a major Interstate cloverleaf -- 40 & 77 -- so I hear a lot of CB radio traffic.
Surprisingly, a lot of it is truckers chewing each other out over use (or non-use) of turn signals, or driving into town with splatter boxes having conversations amongst themselves and wiping out the few channels around the one they're on. Then I hear the truckers (or people who are calling themselves "Driver", anyway) trying to either make the best of it or yell at their sloppy brethren.
The ham community also has jerks -- people who jam repeaters, or yell obscenities, or use bad operating practice when there is a line of folks waiting to talk to a weak station in a rare location.
I've only just found this whole forum, and it seems like a chance to answer technical questions that are within the realm of my expertise and experience. When people weren't paying me to squirt water or talk them out of shooting themselves, they've been paying me to fix CB and commercial FM radios.
The forum heading says this is supposed to be about CB and ham radios:
"CB Radio Forum Breaker One-Nine. CB Radio Forum. Talk about about CB lingo, trucker lingo, CB radio maintainence, anything to do with the CB (Citizen's Band) or ham radios. What does 10-4 mean? We are the #1 CB Radio Forum."
Please don't lump all hams together as boorish elitists. Some of us are #$$****s, but I don't think we've got a monopoly on it. And some of us just aren't as good at keeping it under wraps
FWIW, I try to make sure everyone who brings in a repair or has questions for me understands how their gear works. I give away a lot of time and little fixes so people's stuff will work right for them when they need it. If I can also help them learn a little more, they'll be better equipped to help others.
About 20 years ago the FCC *stopped* mandating that commercial technicians do their policing about licenses in business radio systems.
Some hams still think that *any* license is the same as a badge. I don't get it, either, if that's any consolation.
Drive safe,
-- Handlebar --Longshot34 Thanks this. -
First.
Ham's have every right to #####,if...
They have constant interference from CB ops with massively over modulated radios that bleed over into the 10 meter band, especially when the once in a blue moon DX comes rolling in or if some fool CB op is anywhere above 28.300 talking to joe blow super trucker! Some of these guys spend more money on one ham rig than you or i have on every piece of Cb equipment we have ever owned.
How would you feel if, after spending a boat load of money on your setup, only to have your receive become useless if some guy with more power/modulation than brains wipes it out? Ever heard someone co-channeling you while your talking to someone far off? Pisses you off when you cant hear them right! Co-channeling is not a sign of power,it is a sign of a poorly tuned radio!
That's where all of this ham bashing cb'ers comes from. Not because they think they are better than anyone else (well, some do think that way)but because of the stupid crap mentioned above. If guys would stay off the upper bands, tune their radios not to be over modulated and distorted then the hams would not be raising hell on every CB forum you find. So the CB guys, in the end, have no one to blame but them selves for the hatred expressed by hams!
That's being said, the hams who troll the web just looking for someone to start a fight with really need to get a life. I always get a kick out of some ham talking down a CB op who is running a lot of power when,if you looked in said hams radio room,98% of the time you will find a linear that will do well over the 1500 watt limit. Hams think they need all the power they can get to bust those big pile ups (just like Cb guys) when that once in a life time DX comes rolling in, they have no problem using it to make that contact and they will walk over anyone they have to,to do it! Most wont spend the big money on that high quality antenna and tower ( which will do more for them than big power will) but they dont have a problem spending major money on a big amp. Just as most CB op's do.
There is one ham who lives in Gastonia NC that trolls Youtube, the WWRF,CBtricks and just about every other cb forum, (the ones he has not been kicked off of anyway ) and even trolls the local highways around his home writing down tag/truck numbers of truckers who talk on other channels or run big radios and then turns them into the FCC, just because he has nothing better to do. He is on this forum as well. Any time he gets kicked off of a forum he changes his location and screen name and goes right back to it and its people like him that are the very reason the number of new hams continue to decline every year. People dont want to spend the cash for the ham equipment only to hear the "holier than thou" attitude from other hams when they can stay on the CB bands and save a few bucks. Believe me,you hear allot of that on ham radio these days!

LOL...like I said, you Hams would pick this post apart...and that's all you could come up with???? 's...wow, just another example of your "true" brilliance
-
I say "purchased" because you are paying for the rights...are you not? Ok, then, purchased it is...
-
Had no want, need , nor desire to "pick your post apart", simply pointed out an error, (which also happens to be a pet peeve of mine, like people calling Boeing-Boeings), and your only comeback is a weak attempt to insult me!

Sorry, won't engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed man.
