1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

When are you officially hired?

WHAT???? You never heard the phrase..."don't quit your day job"!

I'm sorry that is usually used at Karaoke Bars...but maybe it applies to truck driving as well!:biggrin_25525:

Not exactly......You're hired when the hiring manager says you're hired or offers you the job and you accept.

Then orientation is a factor as is a physical/whiz quiz, driving test etc.......these things can and sometimes DO disqualify you from the job.

Then if you make it through ALL these hurdles.....you MIGHT get a truck.

I've gone through all of the above requirements and been handed the keys to a rental car and told where the truck was located....usually another company yard someplace....go pick it up...then call dispatch for a load......this has happened a couple of times.

I've been hired and given the keys to a rental car and sent to the company home yard for orientation.....2 days drive away....all expenses for the trip(Motel and meals) were taken care of upon arrival at orientation.

Also been handed an airplane ticket to go to California to get a truck....after orientation.

This last job I just got.....I worked around the shop a day and a half(being paid hourly wage) before the truck I was to drive was through getting the product blower installed at the vendor.

It all varies to one degree or another.....sometimes hoops to jump through go along with the process.

    misterG and Everett Thank this.

My understanding is if it's Swift, you are considered "hired" when you are issued your driver code.

I just don't understand why they can't do a complete background test before hand and then bring ya in.. Doesn't make sense to just call someone.. Ask if they worked for you.. You say yes and then click.. Then the 1st day of orientation they call back.. Oh hey.. Were they eligble for rehire? Did they do a good job, and so on and so forth..

Seems like a lot of wasted bus ticked money that could be used for better purposes.. Like free doughnuts or no ####roach infested hotels.. But alas.. Nothing makes sense when talking about cld mills...

Maybe I missed it, but no one mentioned that you're fully hired once you've been assigned a dispatcher (DM/Driver Manager/Kid behind a computer screen) AND have been given the keys to your own rig AND have been assigned a load.

Just don't be late for your first load or you can consider your employment NULL.

When I drove at CR England the rule was you were not an employee till you owned your truck. Leasees with continual cycling of the lease were considered to be independent of the company.
