Currently running an 01 Pete, hauling liquid fertilizer right now, gonna be hauling gravel this summer, truck is gonna be paid off at the end of the month, has 1.4mil KM on it, N14, 13 speed, rebuilt Rockwell 40's, brand new rubber on new aluminum rims, but the motor is starting to get blowby, cam follower plates on the side of the block leak really bad (PITA to reseal), pretty sure back half of the trans is gonna need work soon, the other think is the front axle is a meritor with the permalube hubs, non serviceable and with 1.4 on it, who knows when those are gonna go. Its also gonna need rear brakes and drums before winter. So im looking at dumping 30G Cdn for a Cummins reman engine and Eaton reman tranny, and prob another 5 in brakes, various bushings and mounts and still have a truck with chipped up paint and dull chrome, the other option is to find a newer pre emission truck, but who knows what a guys gonna get, generally there is a hidden reason why someone is selling a truck. My only thought is put 35 even 40 grand into mine and i know what i got. Anyone have any input or been through a similar situation?
When is it time to upgrade the truck?

If it were me, I'd put the money in the truck you have, and possibly repaint it if you have the funds to do it( if it needs paint). In the end you'll know exactly what you have.
Buy something else, you might end up with more headaches than you have nowjdiesel3406, Juicehauler and Steeleandsonfarms Thank this. -
When the time comes I will do just that. Rebuild my 6NZ in my 03 379EXHD. Just don't make 'em like that anymore.
Juicehauler and jdiesel3406 Thank this. -
Ya what if somebody else is doing the same thing and unloads a truck that needs a lot of work on you. I will keep.my truck forever I love it but that's just me

Me and my ol girl have a history I guess. Through the years there isn't much I haven't had off at some point. I do it as I go now it softens the blow and keeps it driving like it did May the 6th 1985. I probably still spend less than some more than others. Thing about an old truck is you have to love it to take care of it. At least love the life it provides for you and want to keep it. Otherwise all the money you throw at it is mute.

Yeah style wise mine is pretty sharp, and I am somewhat attached to the old girl, just wondering have any of you guys priced out a complete front axle hub to hub kinda thing?

Here is the mistress, uploaded from my phone don't know how good it will turn out -
I haven't. Salvage yards may be bent to say the least. Could you put spindles on your beam that would take oil bath bearings. Suspension isn't my top skill but it's a thought you may check in to
-
Haven't really looked into too deep yet, I just know that the spindle itself won't take a regular oil bath hub.
