When it's $1.48/mile versus .48/mile why not aspire to be an o/o?

Nevermind, I see that you don't even have a CDL yet ;-)

I'm a newbie --no cdl. Had an interview at a brand new ODFL terminal 3 miles from my house today for a dock worker position. They offered it to me. It's part-time 30 hours a week paying $20.00/hour. Initially it would be a pay cut for me, but a foot in the door. They need P&D drivers so it's probably only a matter of time before they send me to their CDL school down in Salt Lake City. Terminal manager said it could be 3 months or maybe longer just depending. How many years back do they go when checking your MVR? I had a pretty lousy driving record when I was 21 but I'm 42 now, so I would think that I would be ok.

I want to be home every night so LTL is what I am after. Should I take the dock position?

Yea, not yet. I'm new to this forum as well. What a great forum with a wealth of info. Pretty much everyone on the forum here is telling me to take the dock position at OD as a stepping stone to earning my CDL and getting a driving position. It'd be a pay cut from my current sales job but I think it's a great opportunity to get my foot in the door at one of the best LTL companies. It'd only be a matter of time before they would put me through their CDL school, so I think I better take the position and run with it.

I don't really have any interest in being an o/o because I have 3 young kids. I want to be home every night, so LTL is perfect for me. Maybe when they are all raised and out of the house. Regardless, I still like learning all that I can about this industry, which is why I post in the "ask an o/o forum." I find the industry pretty fascinating.

That's great! Learning all you can beforehand is useful. However, I can assure you, until you get behind the wheel for at least a couple of years, it's all ethereal ;-)

I bet. Will hopefully be behind the wheel sooner rather than later. I believe getting my foot in the door at Old Dominion will be a blessing in the long run.

I average 1.52 all miles last year with Schneider. No truck or Trl payment. I could survive off 1.48.
