Nope the DOT officer will usually come up on the steps and give you directions from there.
gpsman Thanks this. -
Nah, just be polite. They usually come up on the passenger side and will knock on the door.

Officers will come to your door like they do 4wheelers.Just make sure to get as close to the grass as possible when u do pull over.
gpsman Thanks this. -
I keep my mouth shut except to answer questions ... be very polite ... do not argue with them. Have had various instances when I got no ticket at all by following these simple rules. Any way you look at it, if the LEO is having a bad day or just has it in his mind that he is gonna throw the book at you ... there ain't a whole lot that you can do about it. If he asks you why you did such and such, be careful how you answer it because your answer and the way you say it could work against you ... something like "I'd tell you why but it's not really a good excuse for what I did" or "I could tell you, but I know you've heard it all and seen it all and I'm not going to insult your intelligence with some flimsy excuse like that." All in all ... I've found that being polite and courteous in these situations goes a long way.

Sit in your seat and listen to their commands. In GA I had a friend tell me he got out to go back to the officer and he drew down on him.
One time I got pulled over here in TN and the cop yelled on the loud speaker for me to come back to him. Being a narrow shoulder I come out the passenger side and walked back that way. I got back there and I didn't see the cop. WTH? I peeked around the driver's side and he was walking down that side with his gun drawn. I yelled at him "Hey I'm back here", lol.
When I was younger I got pulled over in my 4 wheeler. Just at that time it started raining cats and dogs. I seen the cop stick his arm out the window and waved for me to come back to him. Heck no, I waved back at him for him to come to me. We did this a few times and then he got mad and drove off.K9OTR, NavigatorWife, dennisroc and 5 others Thank this. -

I've always heard , that what you do (attitude wise) in the 1st few seconds really has a lot to do with just how the traffic stop will go for you. I always tried to be respectful (yes sir/no sir) , if the stop is at night , turn on ALL of the lights inside your vehicle., keep your hands in plain view , and wait til the officer directs what he needs/wants from you. It's really simple...

If dark I turn on interior light, then place hands on the wheel... Wait until the officer comes to the door and proceed with instructions... I do the first two things to put the officer at ease. She/he can see inside the cab AND see me not moving through the mirrors.

I'm sure there are very good reasons - safety etc - that they do this, but it seems like it should be more of a "permission to come aboard?" type thing. Interesting.
I'm not making this into a big deal, and wouldn't ever say anything. I'm just making the observation as a wannabe that it seems odd this has become an accepted practice.
