A lot of these rock haulers have yellow signs on the tailgate that say " Stay back 200 ft- Not responsible for broken windshields". A few DPS officers have made them remove them, but not enough. Lots of illegals in the sand and gravel hauling game in DFW area now. Most drive like they are still in Mexico. Hope a lot of drivers read this and start making them tarp and pay up.

In CA you can "Free-board" a load of rock, sand, or spoil. That is, if you put a board across the side rails (or side boards) and you have at least 6" between the board and the load, you are legal provided the load will not blow out as in the case of dry material or rock dust. Most material leaving a plant is usually moist enough not to blow out.
You never tarp asphalt and you are not required to do so.
One of the most common problems is that tail/belly gates not securing properly. Quite a few of those old Belly-dumpers are out running up and down the 605 between Irwindale and all points south nailing windshields along the way.
They never get repaired until DOT pulls them over and Red tags the rig.rex Thanks this. -
Around here you see lots of rock haulers that don't even take the time to clean rocks off top of gate and on axles much less tarp according to law. Got to be careful around them. Look up and see stuff bouncing at you and try to avoid without wrecking yourself or others.
