Sometimes its not feasible to move over a lane. In these instances it's better to turn on your 4-ways and slow down to at least half the posted speed limit. Move over or slow down doesn't mean cut off or sideswipe the minivan passing you to the left.

It boils down to common sense, and use of the smith system. If you want to call yourself a professional driver, then drive like one. You aren't the only vehicle on the road.

LOL, I like your analysis. Sad, but true - and I include myself in the stereotype.

Yes! I have always called that 'proximity' driving or 'gravitational' driving. It is a phenomenon I have never figured out. I will be on an open highway which has a speed limit significantly above my governed speed. A car will merge ahead of me and then proceed to match my random slower speed to 5 decimal places (e.g. They will do 61.87438 mph in a 70). It seems to me that this would be extremely difficult to do while in front of another vehicle. Yet all day long, every day, vehicles position themselves too close in front of me and then match my speed to astronomical precision. Of course I then have to slow down and then the cycle repeats with a yet slower vehicle that then proceeds to pass and then move in front of me.

its sad to say but a lot of drivers today think only of themselves, you on the side of the road broke down are getting into there time for a few seconds to get over. or it could be as simple as they are to lazy to get over. either way it is very unsafe way to drive. be safe out there

Last winter I was in the chain off area east bound in Reno when a 4 wheeler decided it would be funny to splash me with slush...NDOT happened to be not to far behind and lit him up, still had him pulled over when I started rolling again, The officer waved at me as I passed, I hit my auto horn to thank him.

I always try to get over as soon as I see someone on the side.Just something I was taught when I started driving.Occasionally you get a four wheeler or another trucker who just can't find the time to back off and let you over.In that case i hug the center line and slow down.Last thing I want to do is hit someone who broke down because someone couldn't be inconvenienced enough to let me over.

  9. I will agree on the point of slackers, and foreign ERS who drive as well. Not moving over either.

I at one point passed a pack of. Dare I say names ( Mr. Orange, followed by three red trucks C.R & U.S.& Crete). Seeing a shouldered Swift on the side I stayed hammer lane. Hit hazards and hit my horns to warn swift to look back. The swift driver stayed driver side van trailer with skirts. As all three never moved over. I thought for sure swift was getting dragged under.

Later that day I saw swift driver at a choke & puke . he came up to me to say he hit the dirt and rolled under the trailer, do to my horn. He assumed the pack would of moved over to, but didn't.

Some drivers are so stuck on remote control driving......

I agree people need to be aware of whats up ahead on the side of the road and give them some space but also could you have pulled over on to an off ramp? I don't think I would be out there checking my air pressure if there was traffic whizzing by so close.

While I agree with moving over or slowing down for anybody on the shoulder regardless of the law, was it really a smart thing to check your tire pressures on the side of the freeway. Hot tires are going to give you elevated pressures anyway.
