Well I have read many of the post on here for the last couple of weeks & haven't came across anything like this. I was very lucky to land a OTR Trucking Job 2 years ago, never went to truck driving school & got hired on a permit. (Play like heck to do this today) I had to go with a trainer at first & got my CDL a couple of months later, then 3 months later went Solo. No tickets, No DOT checks anything in two years, ran California, North West, Mid West & South, then last month went down the wrong road & ditched my truck backing up on a very narrow road. Not much damage, bent a step, fuel tank, few scratches & could have been much worse if I was going forward & faster. The company had me make two more runs after this & I was routed back to the home office & was told later that day I had a preventable accident & was terminated. I ran hard for this company & took every run they gave me good or bad & never complained, heck I only asked for 1 day home time in the last 6 months. So now I have been sitting at home for the last month drawing my unemployment & would rather be back on the road no matter how much I hear that some of you are so unhappy with trucking today. I am divorced & kids are all grown up, I am a young 51 & in very good shape, no health problems at all. Please the only ones I want to hear from on this matter is someone that has been there or knows someone that has been in my shoes before. I have not hit on any of the big boys yet about getting back out there, just the small ones & they are going out, not hiring or have quit. How bad is this going to hurt me on getting hired back as a company driver with a larger company?? I really don't want to buy my own truck right now with the way things are right now, but might be the only way to get back out there. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
    Thanks Country Boy

Hey Country Boy, I'm an owner operator and have 2 minor preventables in the last three years and haven't had a problem with it. Right now I'm applying for a new job, when I talked to them and told them about my record it was no big deal. Minor things happen. I've heard from a friend of mine who is trying to get a co. job that pretty much all of the big ones aren't hiring unless you are spotless. With the economy the way it is the can pick and choose who they want. I would check with some of the larger owner operator cos. and see if any of their guys are needing drivers. What kind of trailer do you have experiance pulling ?

well country boy, i have been driving for 15.5 years. and 2 months ago i had my first, well how do i put this, layover of the truck and trailer. i have been up front and honest with companies, but just this afternoon i got a call from a company and they were impressed with my honesty, and will talk with the safety director and owner and maybe have me come in and talk to them in person. so there may be hope for you yet.
i have applies to over 80 companies and have been either turned down, or i am not qualified enough(what?), or they have nothing at this time. or just plain straight forward said no.
but keep your head up and keep trying. i have been trying for 2 months, so something should come around.
    good luck.

While the mistake you made was a stupid one. We have all turned down a wrong road or two. Unfortunately in this day and age one stupid mistake can kill your carrier. Bit the bullet and get on with one of the big boys. They are more forgiving. You just have to keep trying.

I am 30 minutes down the road from Franklin. Check craigslist daily. I am waiting to see if I get a slot at Nashville Tech for school.

I have 8 years experience, too bad it was back in the 80's!
