40 cpm is definitely low for an experienced driver, not saying you can't make a living, but it's far from what the market suggests now. Low to mid 50s in the cpm range is about average.

They're not out of date there driver. That number will probably be inflated this year as things eased back to normalcy.

Also remember that you can't just look at the cpm rate... I have seen ads claiming 80 cpm, but when looking the company up on SAFER, they only averaged 50,000 miles per year per truck (less than 5 trucks, so its not a mix of OTR and locals). I have also seen companies starting at 58 cpm with a $1450 guarantee, but their reputation involves constant harassment during your 10, relaying trailers during your 10, split sleeper daily, and on and on, where they only ever made the guarantee minimum and were living on no sleep.

Any good company can lay out not only their pay structure, but pull out a spreadsheet to show total pay broken down by the mile for their drivers. While our base mileage rate is 53 cents, our average pay per driver is over 64 cents due to mileage bonuses, safety bonuses, detention, layover, stop pays, etc. Makes it hard to compete with the guys that advertise 58 cpm and $1450 guarantee, but our drivers stick around, so we can be a bit more discerning in selecting candidates.

40 CPM is low. Newbie OTR drivers are starting at/near 50 CPM. It varies by region, type of work, home time, W-2/1099. A quick an dirty way to compare pay among companies is compare CPM for newbie Swift, Prime, Werner drivers OTR drivers. You can also read/search the trucking magazines.

Trucking is mostly exempt from Federal law that requires hourly workers be paid at least minimum wage.

It depends on where the company is based and hire most thier drivers.

40 cpm in southern idaho is ok pay, not high but not low.

40 cpm in the Midwest... pretty low.
