I never stop at those big chain truck stops, they have the worst food, the worst service, all the idiots seem to hang out there, I am not one to go and hang out at a truck stop
I usually don't stop at truck stops to sleep, I have my favorite hiding places where I like to park for the night, I have a few favorite smaller truckstops where I like to go, -
1.If i stop at the truckstops at night 90% of the time its Flying J:big parking lot(mostly),gooood food.
2.I like to stop at restareas in Florida:nighttime security, nice forest around.
Since i run east coast(Nyc to Miami and back),parking at night sometimes an issue. But i never stop for the night on a exit ramp/shoulder,for the safety purposes and fines.
Few times had to park inside the mall.If i'm not able to find parking at all I am using my hotel allowence(especially in S.Florida). -
Hubby says first choice is of course at home.......then at the truck stops he parks away from others as much a possible to protect the bubble on his truck he is usually backed in along the side.

If possible, then I like to stop at one of the shippers or receivers, and just park there. When that isn;t an option, then I try to find parking somewhere within reasonable morning walking distance of a bathroom. I try to find flatbeds or dry vans to park near, vice pulling near a reefer if at all possible. Any of our company lots are also great places to sleep at night, and I can safely pull into almost any rail yard and feel welcome.
Despite the number of trucks in Walmarts, I have only done that once. Went down towards Memphis, planned on stopping at a truckstop north of there, found it had closed since the last time I had been there. Ended up in a Walmart parking lot for that one night.
Roadsides are rarely used, though Wisconsin is a friendly place for that and they let you park there with no problems.
And I have to give a shout to the 2 big parking areas on the Indiana Toll Road, mm39 and mm 107. They are huge and always have parking available. -
Hopefully those are bigger than the travel plazas along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. They are always overflowing, and I've had to park at the fuel island just to run into the store to get a cup of coffee.
-
I like to park near a field if there is one, so that I can watch the crows tormenting the scarecrow!

ah.............yes..............like the "stupid ones" in the new Charlotte's web.............
