I just called a couple dozen trucking companies from a list I got off the net. I'm a new driver without experience and I haven't graduated from one of those schools on the preferred list, which typically cost $3K. I picked a cheap school, silly me. :biggrin_25520:

The first question each recruiter asked me was where do I live? I live in Nevada, which was followed by "we don't hire from Nevada." I mentioned a couple times that I could live anywhere, and that I have no ties or reasons to stay where I'm at. The recruiter said I would need a license and a address in another state, then call back. The recruiter didn't bother to mention which other states, so its obviously a polite way of saying, stop talking, hang up now.

So over the road, 48 states, why does it matter which state I live in? Especially considering I live in Reno, which is on a lane, is it not? Interstate 80? :biggrin_2558:

Well I haven't called Swift or Werner yet. So if people wonder how these supposedly bad companies get drivers. Its because nobody else will hire.

The company's attitude is you need to live on one of their travel lanes for hometime. And you CDL has to be from your homestate.

That's funny I used Reno as a test city to find trucking jobs just a week ago. I just ran the numbers and threw it away but Reno is better than any city in NV. It's not a bad place to find work. But you have to go out and find them. Good companies do not need to advertise or do they need recruiters. Use the computer again for trucking companies and this time try trucking companies not trucking jobs. You can get some infomation off the Safestat and then just go around looking and writing down their name. I know a company there if they are still in business was Anderson and Sons and they ran triples to SLC to LV and back. Not the best but better than the bottom feeeder. Try some of the tankers there. They all load just about in the same place. I know there's some that will hire students. Again not the best but a great way to move up into big money. After you've covered Reno and Sparks go out on I80E towards Fenley and beyond. Good luck and get out there.

You're right. I should be focusing more on getting employed by a local company. I don't really care about where I move to or go, so its not so important to me, but I guess its more important to the employer.

Nevada has the second worse unemployment in the nation right now. Michigan is first. The construction industry in Nevada is really bad. Companies are getting away with firing their entire workforce and rehiring for less than half of what they payed the guys they fire. Its getting bad, and Vegas is worse I'm sure, it always is.

    Thanks
