Where do you park on your days off? I live in an apartment and will not be able to park a big rig there. So do i park at a truck stop and call a cab to take me home? Do ALL truck stops allow 3-4 days of parking with no one in it? This is a scary thought, not able to watch your rig for 3-4 days on your days off. The thought of thieves breaking into your big rig while you're at home is hard to swallow. So what do you guys do?

First choice would be to find a secure area close to your home. If none is available, try finding a business close to your house that has a big enough lot, and ask them if it is OK for you to park there when you need to. Because of liability issues, many places will not want your truck on their lot, but sometimes a business will extend a courtesy like this to a local neighborhood person.

If someone does let you park in their lot, keep your truck clean, as well as the area around it. Even if the trash is not yours, pick it up, as a way to thank the business for allowing you to park there. Also, do some business with them if you can, when you are home.

I found a store once that had a busy lot, and they allowed me to park there. There was a bus stop on the far side of the lot. Just a 5 minute bus ride, and I was home.

Also, try to not let your truck look like it's empty. A small radio playing in the sleeper will make it seem like there is someone inside, and will not draw enough electric to kill your batteries in 2 days. Pop in to check on your truck once in a while, if you are going past the area. People tend to leave a truck alone if there is no telling when the driver might return. Try to mix up your schedule a little, so someone watching you can't establish a set pattern. Always keep the bad guys guessing.

Some things I do when I have to park at a truckstop.
I never drive my car to the truck parking area and start unloading my clothes, etc.
I always get my bag/bags and walk into the rear entrance of the truckstop so it looks like I'm doing laundry/shower, etc. then I exit the front door of the truckstop to my car or ride home. Anyone seeing you enter the rear of the truckstop will assume you will be back shortly. Also pull the privacy curtains so no one can see inside the truck while you're gone.

Truck-N-Tech nailed it. I found out through word of mouth that one of the few places that allow truck parking was a bowling alley 2 blocks from my house. Turned out they charge for parking but it was the *only* option. I had parked at the lot of a big self storage place but someone complained about the truck being there since it violated a city ordinance of no commercial vehicles between midnight and 5am so I was forced to move to the bowling alley, which is actually zoned for commercial vehicle parking.

Last time I came home I was bobtail so I was able to park behind a 7-11 with the owner's permission which was directly in front of the place I live at which was great. Plus it was down the street from where the self storage place was so the grumpy person who called about my truck months ago couldn't see it.

I don't know what their problem was, actually. I had the truck washed every time I came home so it looked brand new and shiny when I pulled in. I was parked out of the way of all traffic. There was never any trash around it. It was shut off so it didn't run at odd hours of the night. And the city zoning commissioner was a jerk! My mom told me I should park the truck out front of City Hall instead. lol

If you live close to a storage facility, find out how much they charge for parking. I see RVs and boats at most places.

I'm lucky enough to live near a Walmart that allows parking.

Until someone breaks in and steals the rig! then you complain to the manager of walmart, then they see it as a liability that they dont need and the no rig parking signs begin to pop up all over the lot! Seen this story repeating itself like the guy from Orlando Fl two months ago.
