I know I will need to address my turbo within the next year or so. I have been researching my options with an '06 Cummins with EGR (yes, including the "ahem" delete option).
One thing that seems to be a common theme from turbo heads is that the interior of the turbo should be smooth. However, if you look at the interior of a new factory spec turbo it's cast metal, with all the roughness of the casting sand. Guys that want to open up the power on a turbo might take it apart and spend a day or two grinding that interior to a fine polish (careful not to thin out the walls too much). Pittsburgh Power sells prepolished interiors with a coating on all parts to make them more durable, but PP is expensive.
I've been a helper on more than a few street rod enthusiast's overhauls. Giving your engine the ability to BREATHE makes all the sense in the world to me.
Saving money on that new turbo may be a priority right now, but what IF you could save all that extra cost within a few months by installing a better turbo? That's the way I am leaning when it comes time to "refresh" my engine.
Where does everyone buy their Turbos?
