i know i got my brakes hot a long time ago heading eastbound into cumberland. had a 5 speed mack and loaded tanker. trying to run too fast, not really knowing what i was doing. lucky i had good brakes, i had them smoking and they were starting to fade. finally got stopped, jumped out and put a wheel chock down, and then sat there awhile. scared me.
after that i started respecting them mountains and making sure i was in low enough gear to start with on the way down. -
i guarantee you won't fall asleep behind the wheel up there. Those mountains get your blood pumping.

Either you know how to do grades, or you don't. 13 miles of I68 or six miles of Floyd Hill on I70 in CO... if you can't manage one, you won't manage the other.
What makes I68 worse in my opinion isn't the length... again, if you know what you're doing, it won't make any difference if the grade is two miles, six miles, 13 miles, etc. It's the point where you're restricted to the right lane AND you get traffic merging onto the highway from on-ramps on the right. -
