Yeah I remembered that rule of thumb from CDL school. My trainer didn't. I'm glad I'm not in the truck with him anymore. One of these days, God spare that man, but he might kill someone or himself... he actually wanted me to up shift going down hill on the gorge in I40!!! Boy I tell you, I think trainers should be contracted and friggin certified by the state ... idiots!

In 1977 or 1978, the guy who taught me how to drive truck took me down that hill. We were in a 1964 Kenworth Cab Over with a 335 Cummins with a 5X4 and no Jakes. We were pulling a 40 foot Furniture Van for Andrews Van Lines. We moved allot of Military personnel and Families back then and we had to finish some Army Colonel's move in the woods west of Breezwood. James told me it was 20%! And until just now I always believed him. I remember it was one hellacious hill and I was only on it one time....but..it is a hill I'll never forget! US-60 from WV to VA was a mother as well. Much better since they built I-64 through there.
Sometime I'll have to tell ya'll the story about James and how he took a runaway 16 year old under his wing, gave me a job and taught me to drive a truck...he was an awesome guy! -
Pa 219 heading north into Ridgway has a pretty good hill. US 322 east outta State College is another. But PA 645 from Pine Grove to Frystown is probably the worst I've been on.That's 14% with a 180 degree curve at the bottom.
dannythetrucker Thanks this.
