Just wanted to see what kind of response this would generate.
I'm sick of the Detroit area. No jobs..devastated economy..City leadership is in shambles. We decided we need to leave this area before we end up down the drain with everyone else. But where to go?
I'm an experienced driver of 16 years with a clean MVR and both a FAST card and a TWIC card. Dry van , flat bed and tanker experience. You'd think I could find a decent job. We would like a more southern region..maybe TN or KY or NC. Any suggestion would be a help. Anyone live in a really nice place they want to brag about? :biggrin_1square1:

I know that the Bowling Green, KY area has got some driving jobs. My dad's cousin works construction down there as an equipment operator. Dad just called him within the last week or so checking on Teamster work in the area for me and he said there's all kinds of work available both in the construction and freight area. I'd think there'd be plenty of non-union work as well.

    Baack Thanks this.

Now Greyhound's gonna sell a lot of tickets to Bowling Green . You people have to realize there's a lot of jobless , desperate people reading these forums . Name a company or area with jobs and get ready for the stampede .

This is an odd statement. I guess jobless desperate people should stay put and not try to build a decent life for themselves. I know most jobless desperate people have to take a greyhound everywhere they go, but seem to be able to afford computers with no problem.

thanks Scarecrow. I have been through the Bowling Green area a few times and thought it looked like a possibility.

my brother-in-law got laid off after only being at a place a short while after he had already lost his own business that put two kids thru college.

anyways a new job opened up here in town, his brother-in-law is tight with the guy that does the hiring... tells him its a shoe in...

bro-n-law heads over the next morning after the job is posted... hey I know so and so can you help me out...???

was told... well... we're glad you know so and so... but we've got 600 applications in this morning so you'll have to fill out an app and we'll get to you when and if we can.

sad for the bro... really sad most of these apps were from all over heck and back 60-70 miles away... willing to move... just please hire me..

Nothing odd about it at all . See im6under's post following your's . You missed the point . While there may be 50 jobs in Bowling Green , if the companies' names were mentioned they'd have 10 times as many applicants than jobs . Wasted trip for 90% of the people . Just like all the people going to trucking school to get their CDL . There is already an oversupply of drivers and growing numbers of them have no chance of being hired . The more graduates schools turn out the greater the odds are the graduates won't be hired .
Ever think people bought their computers long before there was any indication they would lose their jobs ?

We have all kinds of jobs in my area. If you're willing to take them.

Nothing here is union scale. The average non-trucking job pays about $12 an hour. Local trucking jobs do good to pay $10.

But the cost of living, is minuscule beside a large city.

I guess it all depends on what you want, and what your expectations are when you get there.

A 2 earner family, bringing home $2k a month, lives very well where I am. If they're financially mature.

OK, RickG, this is one point we will agree on. truck driving schools have the same mentality that got this country in trouble in the first place. They are gonna get their money even if they have to lie and cheat and sell you a dream about big money and respect and a happy family that is never gonna happen (or rarely these days).
If there were ten ads in the 'Drivers' section of the Detroit Free Press last week, 8 of them were driving schools. I wonder if the sales/recruiter guys have a hard time sleeping at night.
