Thanks for a great discussion about this guys. I like learning why others choose a different oil type. My papa has told me that all they used to use was straight 30 weight oil, year round. He used to put a coleman camp stove under his truck in cold weather, and leave it on for a couple hours to help warm the oil, and all the rest.
I do mine every other month. However, I only run for about 2 weeks at a time then home. So it has 4 weeks of running on the oil......more or less.
When it got really cold I would put a tarp over it with a salamander heater. Worked great and it prevented your tires from freezing to the ground.
Our fluctuation in temperature is similar to yours. Synthetic 5W40 helps a bunch to get things turning in the morning.
When I went on vacation in 2017, papa scheduled my truck to go into a shop, and get an inframe engine overhaul. When he went to pick it up, they told him that for the age and hours, it was in remarkably good condition still. They commented that the driver was obviously taking good care of it, and the oil being used was a good choice. That made me feel great about how I treat my truck, and that the Shell 5W40 synthetic was doing its job.
I cleaned out local Sams of Rotella. Got (8) 2.5 gallons. Came out to $13.80 per gallon. I suggested earlier, if you can’t find oil in your area, get the cheapest Sam’s membership and start looking where you pock up and deliver. Check the website for stock at those locations. There is a 5 case limit on 1 gallon jugs of Delvac. This store has a full pallet.
3 Walmart’s I’ve been to didn’t have any grease other than Lucas Red and Lucas Green. Nothing cheaper. And they were out of my favorite cookies!!!!! Now it’s getting personal!!
