My question concerning KW setting up their gliders for '04 only motors for some of you guys who might know. Does that mean you can put an MBN motor in a KW glider? MBN's were in late '03 trucks and early '04 models, MBN might be considered an '03 motor, I don't really know. What is so different about an '04 acert compared to an '03 MBN or 6NZ ? I mean how difficult could it really be to just install a 6NZ into one of these KW gliders? To me it doesnt seem like it would be all that difficult to get around or am I wrong?

Mauk Industries can make a wiring harness for most any engine / chassis combination. I am sure there would be a work around someone comes up with.

So I talked to my sale guy tonight... They had a meeting with all the dealer yesterday about gliders. It was talked about changing whats going on but they were all told that the EPA and 2 other agencies (dont know who) have taken the position that they will not be changing anything with gliders, they feel that with the IRS and many states like CA changing laws that it will works its self out over the next fews years and that with in the next ten years there will be very few state that you can build a glider in. Thank god I live in the "live free or die" state.

Usually they come without an engine, tranny or rears, but sometimes people order them with those things, especially when they don't have cores to exchange. Many folks pull the rears off the old ride and put em on the glider. Glider kits are also popular because they aren't subject to FET which saves a fistful of dollars. Welcome to The Truckers Report.

A glider, by itself, is basically a full body, chassis and steers. You then can use your own or factory remanned engine, tranny and drive axles, or you can have one of those three also brand new. Those listings you see are for a complete, ready to go to work, finished glider truck. You can get one completed off the lot at dealers like Fitzgerald Trucks in Crossville, TN, or you can do like I did and go with a Freightliner dealer and spend days and days spec'ing out every last detail and have a truck that is just about everything you wanted in a truck, complete with a factory remanned engine and transmission complete with warranties. And mine, spec'd to the gills, was roughly $40,000 less than a comparable new truck with all the emission headaches.

Kenworth W900 gliders are already a reality. They have been available for quite sometime now. As for why only 2004 or newer engines, it's because in 2004 the EPA had a new set of emissions regulations that came out that year and changed quite a few things with the engines thus the CAT "bridge motor."
