I am in the process of getting my lisence for commercial trucking and I was wondering where most owner operators get their trucks worked on when the problems are beyond their skill level. I am pretty good with mechanics but is there a good big name repair chain or anything that is a reliable and accesible shop for most truckers?

Most o/o's I know have a local diesel mechanic that they use when they are home. The small shop operators/mechanics will have better rates (cheaper) than the dealerships or truckstops. It may take longer to get your truck repaired though especially if he has to order parts or he will "get to it when he can."

Many o/o's will lease on with a larger carrier and utilize their in house shops to save money on labor and parts as well.

Other than that Speedco offers quick oil changes and simple stuff (kinda like a Jiffy Lube for big trucks) at lower prices than the truckstop chains.

Of course the more you can do yourself the more money you will save. Of course you cannot deduct your time spent "repairing" your truck on your taxes but you can deduct the parts you used.
