    Good morning all....

I am currently attending CDL school at Glendale Community College in Phoenix AZ. I have four weeks remaining... I have all endorsements (still need fingerprints for HAZMAT)

I have seen quite a few posts (I try to read as much as I can) about the different companies that will hire students. I am a fairly easy going guy, I don't complain much. I just do the job. But I have two young kids and a wife, have been unemployed for just over a year. So I have to make sure the choice will be a good one. Concerned that I will not make enough money...but anything should be better than the $265/wk on unemployment, but I still don't want to be taken advantage of!!!!
I know the first few months will be rough...

I have looked into the following companies and would like input on the good and the bad (there is alot of bad posts out there).

KLLM? I didn't see too many bad posts about them. My chief concern was the home time. They don't have a yard/terminal in Phoenix but was told by recruiter I would be allowed to take truck home, got the impression they don't take loads to Phoenix at all... Pay was decent (.30 mile with a average of 2500 mi/week).

Con-Way? Orientation then a seemingly short but sweet training time (7500 miles with trainer). Pay seemed OK.

Stevens? Recruiter seemed too busy to talk. I was put on hold many times.

Watkins/Shepard? Kinda like the 10 day orientation idea. But concerned they may be shoving too much info...plus the threads I read seemed like there was alot of people being sent home..the age of the equipment was also a concern....

Swift? I know the reputation...but is it really true??? I was not considering them before but I talked to the Schneider recruiter(Schneider was on the top of my list) and they are no longer hiring out of Phoenix (they were a week ago). Home time would be a breeze as the terminal in Phoenix is not far from my home.

I know I do not want to go to Prime, Werner, US Xpress or USA Truck...

Your input would be greatly appreciated....feel free to suggest other companies hiring out of AZ....

I can only tell you my experience with Swift. I enjoy working for Swift and I was OTR out of the Phx terminal, now we're on the Wal-Mart dedicated fleet out of Casa Grande. I will tell you that I enjoy the Casa Grande fleet a great deal more than the Phx fleet.

There are several dedicated fleets in the Phx area and once you get some experience with Swift you might be able to get on one. That would give you a more steady income and more regular hometime.

If you think of any specific questions or if you have some specific concerns I'll be happy to share any answers I might have. (or just think I have LOL)

We got good miles when OTR and we get very good miles on the dedicated fleet.

You go hippie ! Good advise !!!! And in my opinion..... If they don't have a yard in AZ or a lane through there then you're not getting home. Nobody ( cept o/o ) is going to off route the truck . But if you're lucky enough , 36 to 48 hrs max. ( every 6 weeks ) It's 10 to 14 out with 2 off along the freight lanes of the carrier.

You sure you want to hook up with a OTR carrier ?

Explore ALL options. In our area (PAC NW), there are several companies that take new drivers. Some are OTR, some regional (home weekly) and some are local such as Lowes, construction, or fuel hauling. I know that you are desperate to provide a better life for your family, but look before you jump. Then choose what is best for you.

Let us know how you do. Best of luck.

Hippee/Chalupa....I have looked at local companies...they will not touch you without experience of at least six months... I have to "cut my teeth" somewhere..then do the local thing...

Palazon....what are some of the companies that will take students?
