Hi everyone, I would like some info on what to do? I already went to CDL school and received my CDL back in 2012. It was a carrier sponsored program and then I drove solo for them for about 3 months then turned in my truck. The reason I turned in my truck is because I was not making any money out on the road. 11 cents per mile. Now my recruiter told me I would start out at $45,000.00 my first year. It was costing me more out of my pocket to survive out on the road than I was making on the pay check. I was getting plenty of loads and running them, but, for 11 cents per mile. No negotiating, tried to reason with the company about a better wage, would not do it! I tried to tuff it out, but, when I had just ran a 14 hour day driving, got unloaded, and was told to drive past my 14 hours to go weigh empty and then go pick up a load, that did it for me! I was not going to risk losing or paying a fine against my CDL because a driver manager told me to do so or else! I have kept my CDL current, and would like to go back into the field again, but, I do not want to shell out $5,000.00 again for school. Is there any companies that will bring me on with a refresher course and where I don't have to pay again for something I already have. I don't want to go to swift or really, any of the big carriers, but, the smaller carriers want recent CDL school grads or 6 months to 3 years otr experience. I don't get the recent grad part, they just graduated with no experience, I have already done that part of it. I have not forgotten how to drive a truck. (This is not meant to offend anyone new to driving or just graduating) Hell, I'm still new! I just don't understand why the smaller carriers won't give you a chance with a current CDL and no recent driving experience? If I want to pay $3,500.00 to a trucking school to go through a refresher course, then, in 3 weeks, I can go work for a small carrier. I have a CDL in my wallet and it's basically useless to me. What an expensive license to have and not be able to use! Does anybody have anything on any carriers that would bring me aboard and will be honest about the starting pay? One carrier is telling me after refresher training, I will get 75 cents per mile. I find this very difficult to believe, especially when most driver jobs are 21-37 cents per mile. Any feed back would be appreciated on any good carriers that are honest if that still exists today and would give me a shot without having to go back to school! Thanks everyone, and be safe trucking out their!

Schneider may take you, unfortunately you probably won't be able to get in the Bulk division because of where you live but they are the best of the Megas in my opinion. Chinatown will be along shortly and he knows every company on earth a d what they pay, if he misses this thread I would P.M him, dudes an encyclopedia of trucking jobs.

.75 cpm sounds like Western express. What that means is if you earn all the assessorial pays, etc plus milage, it would average out to .75 cpm. Actually, Western Express is a good way to get back on the road; some drivers don't last a month and some stay for years. Just do what you have to do to get rolling again.

Try Schneider; good company with a new terminal in Phoenix.

These companies hire drivers with a long gap in driving; try these also:

    Pride Transport
    Super Service

If I think of anything else, I'll post later.

Why go for the megas? Just go out and apply to a bunch of local companies like cement, dump truck, aggregate, trash, etc haulers. They pay hourly and you can make like $15-20 an hour hauling locally. It doesnt really matter how long you've been driving-as long as you know how to drive, dont have too many points on your record and if their insurance accepts you, your golden. It seems like that company really lowballed you. I've never heard of any company paying 11 cents a mile. Even swift pays like 30 cents a mile.

.11 cpm sounds like CRST. They pay teams .22 cpm to split. That is extremely low and I don't blame you for quitting. As far as any company paying company drivers .75 cpm, that is unheard of and I would not believe it for a second.

Odds are you will have to do some sort of refresher course, or maybe go out with a trainer for a couple weeks again. But AZ is a good spot for trucking. Almost every major company has a terminal in either Phoenix or SoCal, or both. I think if you start filling out on line apps and making phone calls, you will find a job relatively easily. I'd start with Chinatowns recommendations. Best of luck.

Have you done any driving since 2012? Celadon would be one to check into as well. I don't think Super Service hires from AZ. IWX has a terminal in King man, not sure of their hiring requirements. I too am looking to go back OTR as I can make more than my current job instructing. Wil-Trans is a company I've applied at. Was told by the recruiter that I would have to team with another driver for about a month, as I have been working local since 2012.
