I have a class A CDL w/ tanker endorsement. Have Never actually driven a semi T/T . Just driven dump w/ backhoe trailer. Anyway I'm trying research which company is best to start with. Ill give some back ground information. I'm 40 have spent most of my life with a shovel in my hand, I'm not afraid to get dirty or actually do manual labor. I live in Columbus Ohio. I don't drink or do drugs no criminal record maybe 1 ticket for speeding in last 5 years. I know nothing about route planning and driving a T/T in general besides the stuff you have to learn to get your CDL. I'm assuming that in orientation you get trained in the actual driving of the rig and learn some of the paper work , rules etc. Eventually if I choose to do this I think I would like to be an O/O but I would have a lot to learn before doing that.
where to start career

what makes them better than schnieder swift and the rest? Do you know how the per diem pay works? They have 2 pay scales
-
Millis = 850 trucks
Swift = 18,000 trucks
Schneider = 11,000 trucks
Millis is MUCH closer to the (25 or less trucks) company that I prefer.quintin.payton Thanks this. -
Millis tries to keep class size down to around 4 students. This means more wheel time.

When you have less trucks, it is more crucial to keep the trucks moving. They (company) are looking for ONE load in the area, to get the ONE truck going immediately---large company, someone is gonna be waiting. And as far as repairs/break downs go...again, that truck means much more to the small company, because they NEED to get it moving and generating revenue---large company, no hurry, they have 10,000 more running to cover the broke down trucks' loss. -
Get your hazmat and pull you a tanker. ..make a darn good living and you don't have to be on the road long at all...most tank companies advertisie 7 to 10 days out and make 40k plus your 1st year

If under 21, local companies in your area like feed, milk hauler, hopper trucking.
