Kind of a silly question but if you had to do it over again, where would you live in terms of having an advantage with hauling freight. Say as either dry van or reefer o/o. Wife and I are thinking of a state with no state income tax, like Texas or South Dakota. Home time would be second to having a good freight lane (job security).

Well it's probably a good idea to live close by to one of your carriers customers. Like my self if I was going to work OTR I would work for Schaffer or Crete because they haul a lot of loads for Nestle and Nestle Minor has a plant right down the street from my house in close proximity anyhow, and Schaffer hauls lots of loads for them.

Where are your companies major customers or in your case your broker where do a lot of your loads come from if you use one broker more then another.

Add to those considerations if you live near a terminal for your trucking company your commute during hometime is short and your truck can be maintained & parked in a secure location while you get out of the truck. I've ALWAYS worked & lived close together. Many students in my CDL class wanted to find a company that would let them take the truck home to avoid having a car just to drive back and forth. I'd rather have a "beater" car for a once a week or once a month commute rather than find a place to park a truck in the suburbs.

TN, FL & Wyoming also have no income taxes although WY & FL may be ruled out for other reasons. Look on the map for where major interstate highways intersect. That can mean lots of freight and/or "going past the house" often. Then you live a comfortable commuting distance from those intersections so the home prices & crowd factor are to your liking.

I'd live where I thought I'd be happiest.

Even the best paying trucking jobs aren't worth living somewhere I don't want to be.
