Why are most of the responses thinking teaming is training?
How much instruction is the new guy getting while in the sb? How much instruction is he getting while the "trainer" is sleeping?

No, teaming is not training. Teaming is a way for megas to churn out half trained drivers for cheap.

You would think on a trucking forum, one would understand what I mean by team driving

It’s kind of hard to learn from someone who is asleep

You dont have a CDL, you must be trained. Going into it with this attitude you might want to do yourself a favor and consider another career path

For the THIRD ####ING TIME: I’m not against being in the truck with a trainer

I’m opposed to running the truck like a team while I’m training, you can not train someone who is asleep, nor can you be trained by someone who’s asleep

You act as if they’re going to throw you the keys day 1 and say “ alright get going, I’m taking a nap.” Not how it goes at all. If they’re any good at their job they’re going to be in the jump seat for at least a week while you drive and start learning how to do all this wonderful trucker stuff.

“How can I learn while they sleep?” Well, you’re doing exactly that. You’re putting what you’ve learned to practice doing it by yourself. Instead of someone right next to you constantly getting in your ear about this that and the third and holding your hand feeding you directions. You’re responsible for looking at the map and following a route, at least I was. It’s getting used to not having someone right there with you and making your own decisions. Now, obviously your mileage may vary and I think there’s plenty of cases where trainers simply use students as steering wheel holders, but that’s not how it’s supposed to be.

How the hell do you think they could sleep day one with a brand new driver at the wheel? When they finally do retire to the bunk, it will be a compliment to you that you have proven yourself enough and they trust you enough to try to get some sleep. You have no idea how many jams they will get you out of in the first month and they best part is, if they do their job correctly, they will teach you how to think through the issues so you can figure them out on your own once they are not with you.

You really sound like you think driving a truck is like driving a mini van.

So let me get this straight. You don’t trust a trainer to drive while u sleep, but you trust a trainer to sit next to you and hold your hand the entire time you’re driving and show you the proper way to drive a truck?o_O
