Actually there are two things that they may not count this as experience, one is the insurance requirements of the company and the other is the claim there is a FMCSA regulation on hiring. I am thinking that a company can easily make the claim to the insurance company that this type of experience counts which is up to the company to do however as far as the FMCSA regs go, there is nothing in the regs saying it doesn't count as long as there is a CDL.

Military regs, and instructions cover the same as the FMCSR as far as driving goes. The difference comes in when you're in a convoy for military movements. That can be considered movement for national defense. I was OTR with a rental tractor and Navy trailer while on active duty and I had to go by the same regs any other driver goes by. I didn't have to pay for my permits (overloaded) but I had to have them. The states would issue them free however, I did have to pay any handling charges to get me the permit if I had to change them. Most of the time I left with all the permits in hand.

It's extremely hard to find all the regulations because just like all the other regs it's not written in one publication. But most vets realize there are requirements for driving and know the difference between national defense movements and normal everyday driving.

The military is self insured just like many commercial companies are. There shouldn't be any questions there. But it's a battle no matter how much one person knows because someone along the line is going to use assumptions. That's why I always say keep a record of all your driving no matter where it is.

Thanks to everyone posting info on here. I forgot to mention that I also have my AMMO-62 and HAZ-11 certifications, which are necessary under Army regs to transport HAZMAT off-post. Judging by what everyones been saying I'm fairly confident that I should have no problem finding a job. Like I said before, I know I'll be required to work with a trainer for a while and I'll be the proverbial "low man on the totem pole", but all I really want is an opportunity to prove myself and earn a decent living for my family. Thanks again!

I actually know quite a few people who went directly from Active Duty to KBR, there's a lot of money to be made with them and the work is fairly easy (and exactly what I'm doing now) but with all the budget cuts to DOD I'm not sure if that's going to be the case much longer.
