Blue Knight, I'm in a similar situation--56 years old, laid off last year after 26 years in white collar job, just graduated from driving school with my CDL and have chosen a job offer fron Schneider driving tankers OTR. I'm aware of several of the carriers you mentioned but concluded Schneider made the most sense for me right now, at my age, with an opportunity to make decent money, be trained driving tankers, and work for a company that may be conservative but is large and diversified, pays even better once I'm experienced, and will be around until I retire. Hope that helps. Best of luck!

I talked to Maverick, but I live outside their hiring area for students. They said after six months experience they would hire me.

Which companies have uniforms? I've never had a job where I didn't wear a uniform. I don't know if I have enough clothes of my own.
-
I know what you mean. I had several that I wore. Police, military, and football and basketball referee uniforms, hospital security.

Check into WIA funding for school. That is who paid for mine in 2009. I didn't owe a penny.
Out of the new list? Conway IMO. Problem may be they are getting away from twin screw tractors. The back on is a "pusher" or "bogie" axle. Not smart in the ice and snow. -
Blue Knight that's weird with Maverick. They actively recruit from Cross Country. Several top companies recruit from there. We live in Denton and my husband started with Maverick right after graduating. Maybe it's because you haven't gone to school yet.
Good Luck on whatever you decide but I would stay away from the company schools that lock you into driving for them only. -
Realized you weren't considering Flatbed. That's probably why. I still recommend going to cross country though.

Averitt has uniforms, short hair, no beards, etc. I'm not sure if they hire students. (They might!) They had to lower their hiring requirements because of today's present driver situation. -
I noticed you received an offer from England, I am a current CR England driver, they are not as bad as you read on these forums but if you already have your CDL then I would try someone better. CRE is a good starter company for someone to get their CDL and get their time in but the pay is a bit on the low side and plus your shunned on the road and in places like this.
Just my firsthand experience and opinion.
