I just applied to Prime Inc., Central Refigerated and Stevens Transport for company paid CDL training. I am not going the community college route since I need to be a resident here in NC and I need another 4 or so months to qualify and the bills are piling up! Which one of these three would provide me the better training, pay and opportunity to become a successful company driver? Which company of the three offers the better opportunity to someday become and owner-operator? Also, if there are any other companies that I should consider applying to as well? I have been unemployed for a year now and am living with my in-laws... I gotta work and work in a field where there is work and hiring is taking place. My father-in-law is an owner operator and I see that there is money to be made in trucking if you work hard and do what you gotta do... Thanks in advance for any input and I truly appreciate current drivers for these companies to reply to this thread since you guys have the inside scoop. Also, I live in North Carolina so please keep that in mind as well. Thanks guys![]()
Which company training to go with? Where can I get a good start into trucking?

Noobz, my wife and I ran for Central and did pretty well for ourselves. Right now I would concentrate on the basics though. You have a couple years ahead of you before jumping into owning a truck. That is a whole other job. Right now make your mistakes on the companies dime! If you want to prepare yourself for owning a truck someday once you get going by yourself maybe in about 3-6months from now start running and keeping track of everything you do as if you were an owner operator. There are a lot of good business courses you can take on the computer and also companies like Central have classes and mentors in which you can prepare yourself for owning your own business. Keep in mind, companies like Central hope to see you succeed and will help you, however, the guys leasing you the truck just want money and if you aren't cutting the mustard the will very quickly find another warm body to cover that lease! The leasing program is there to make money selling trucks and are no different than car salesman. They are going to talk you into a brand new shiny truck for no money down and when you fail they are going to tell the next guy the same thing. You will be sent home packing with bad credit and a bad DAC. Now you will be looking for the bottom feeder companies because they will be the only ones that touch you. Being an owner operator for a single driver is very , very tough! The money you are going to make at your best will only be a few hundred dollars a week extra. My wife and I ran team and just really felt bad for the single drivers pulling out of the yard with their brand new truck. Sorry I don't mean to sound negative because yes it can be done, by an experienced trucker who is very knowledgeable in business with a good chunk of money in the bank to cover his butt! Enjoy your training and enjoy being over the road as a company driver for awhile. You will look back on those stress free days after you become an owner operator. Check out OOIDA. Good site to prepare yourself for down the road. Good luck to you.
