Decide what work you'd wish to do and then get the endorsement it requires, if any. Endorsement is a written test, not hard to do any time, if there is more than one brain cell available.
Which endorsements would you recommend new CDL holders get?

You can take any of the tests for any endorsement online. I always use TruckerCountry.com for my hazmat renewal. There are links at the top of this page to take those tests at this website, although they may not have as many versions of the test as at TC. I would get all endorsements you think you might ever use from day one. Then you never have to go back to the driver license office to add any. They are cheap and never expire, except for HazMat with expires every few years and costs about $200 or so. It can also take 2 months to complete all steps so if you can afford the$200, get it and then drop it later you don't need it.

Let's you drive a city bus, or a tour coach etc without the kid hassles. -
Seriously, get all the endorsements you can since you will be there anyways. Hazmat, tanker, doub/trips are a must. It can help you in the future if an opportunity pops up and are ridiculously easy to pass.
