I am hoping someone can tell me which GPS might have certain features.

I want to buy about as cheap as I can but I do want some things. I can get a refurb truckers GPS Rand McNally 500 for $200 but don't want to spend that much and don't think it will do what I want. I can get a car GPS for maybe $30. I was thinking I could use the car GPS but knowing it might direct me onto a road I shouldn't be on so be careful and watch for signs and recalculate as needed. I want it so I don't miss turns on the way there and get way lost. I also thought that calling the shipper could get me directions for the last few miles that may not be on major highways and therefore more likely to have non-truck routes and keep me safe.

I know sometimes a GPS will pick a strange route so I would like to be able to modify the route and have the GPS direct me on my route. I went to the Garmin site and looked an manuals and such and I can't tell which one will.

Do you know which ones will allow you to change the route? Is there a brand or model that you either like or hate?

as a rookie you should learn to use a map, and not depend on a GPS, calling a shipper/reciever is a good idea, make sure to say to them, "dont forget im in a 18wheeler 13'6 tall", Ive had companies lead me in the wrong direction before in upstate NY. when I called them back about the low bridge, they said, OH!, didnt realize your in a truck, but back to the GPS, when It comes to features, you get what you pay for, save your money, and when the time is right, buy a good GPS set for trucks

My Pete 387 has a factory built in dash GPS. It's the best GPS I ever seen. It's a Navaid powered by Lowrance C. The same company that makes ship navigation aids. It's truck friendly with all the truckstops, scales, rest area's and any business you want to find like Walmart. I even use it to order food delivered.
It even has a built in picture viewer and MP3 player. The directions come across the stereo system speakers.
You can alter any route if you want to match your map reading skills and known directions. Most of the time it's correct except for a few local restrictions which is easily corrected. It also has Google Earth loaded and you can zoom in and check out the building and parking lot you are going to. That's a handy feature with a place that has multiple entrances and you want to see the docks and trucks.
It has multiple more features including all trip stats. The ETA is very accurate as it calculates all the different speed limits enroute.

It won't be long, all trucks will have them in dash. The ones that hate them can look at the picture viewer, lol.

I haven't seen a GPS you can't alter the route? Most allow you to program more than one trip. That is an easy way to alter a route. Just break your trip up into legs by the know routes and it will take you in the right way. Many you can touch the screen and say go here at the correct turn/road. Than the route will fix itself.
