Two options for a fresh out of school newbie.
1) .37cpm long haul - about $40,000 a year
2)$24/hr oil field driver (heavy haul, flat bed, rig moves etc) - about $60,000 a year
which is the better option? The oil field pays better but is pretty hard on the body.
Which is a better way to get started?

There is no best way.
What will work best for you? -
I don't think it will be hard to figure it out.......

I know, 60k/year is a nice number but I'd like some input from a driver who has experience in this type of work.

depends what you want to do tuck--kind of hard to compare the two--for the patch you usually get some kind of shift--2 weeks on one off--or whatever--you can get dirty stinky---must like chaining up---it also depends depends what you do there--sometimes lots of sitting and waiting--but at least you get paid for it
otr is what it is---either driving or sleeping--sometimes waiting around--which some isnt paid
lots of jobs in oil now--but that can really fluctuate depending on the drilling incentives
like the bumper sticker says "PLEASE GOD , LET THERE BE ANOTHER OIL BOOM, I PROMISE NOT TO PISS IT ALL AWAY AGAIN" -
You are going to sit for long periods of time no matter where you go. Some getting out of the truck will probably be good for you. If you can get into something like that I personally would not hesitate.

Oilfield work is a bit like being an ER doctor---always on call, never know what to expect, etc. The physical part you're already aware of.
If you have a thrives-under-pressure personality and are in good physical shape, the oilfield job is one you'd probably like better even without the money difference. People count on you in a big way, and the satisfaction of being someone who has earned their respect and trust (provided you manage to do that) is a great feeling.
If you like things more planned out and laid back, and/or your strength & conditioning isn't so hot, it will grind you down pretty fast, though.
