Besides brokers, try using any large carrier. Most have "overflow" freight that they have commited to, but do not have the equipment to handle it, so, will therefore need O/O's to fill in.

Sign up for the internet load boards... get a laptop to keep up with what's available for freight. Establish a relationship with a few carriers that trust you and pay decent rates.

I thought I'd never say this but try C.H. Robinson... they are HUGE and have some decent programs to keep your truck loaded. I've been hauling a lot of Robinson loads lately and have been getting about $1.80 per mile on average... not up to what I get from my carrier but it gets me to my home territory where I do a lot better on my outbound loads.

Insulated van... I pulled the TK unit off of it last week so I can haul more weight. I'm paid by the cwt so that's an important part of the deal.

Most of our backhauls are dry van loads so they are usually 45-46K. I can scale 46,000 if i keep my fuel load down. Last week I started by loading iron castings right in my hometown... took a two stopper to Michigan then I loaded potatoes to GA. I reloaded Wednesday with bauxite in super sacks and unloaded Friday AM in Detroit.

I have to put my truck in the shop Monday morning... got water in the oil.

I'm leased to a small 'captive' carrier owned by a WI shipper. We primarily haul out of central/northern WI to points east of the big river... a little west coast from what i hear. I'm new here only having made two weeks of runs.

My loads last week were cheap... my first paid me $1000.00 flat rate on about 400 miles. The spud load was $1100.00 on 600+ miles... and the backhaul another $1050.00 to Detroit. My check for this week will be about $3150.00. I run on my own $$$... no fuel cards or deductions from my gross revenue. When we start shipping our own product I'll make more money... on many of the runs we are paid to deadhead back home (figured in the rate)... if you get a backhaul that's where you make the decent $$$ as you are being paid twice for each mile.

My son hauls for these guys with his own authority... he's done pretty good with them over the past year. I get 97% of the freight outbound from our facilities... 92% back home as a rule. But I pay all the truck expenses including cargo and general liability. But it's a good trade off against getting 75% and having the carrier pay the insurance.
