It depends a lot on where you live, where you run, and how you run. Some owner ops have more than one type of trailer and use whichever one is hot or in season at the time. There's lots to learn by using the search function of this discussion board.

I plan buying used run of the mill steel 48 flat but to be honest even if we did have 1 it wouldn't of moved much in the last yr and a half. One of the guys that parks by us has 2 trucks also and his flats hardly move.

Knowing what’s around you can be a major key. You can sit at home and let the brokers keep pushing loads back until they have to move it and there you are sitting at home with a fresh clock asking $2,000 for a $700 posted rate 200 mile run and they have to accept it.

Dry van hauling Class A explosives had the best rate of anything we hauled.
That being said, it didn't produce as much net profit as other things that payed less. By the time we paid the increase in our insurance, and got the other necessary permits we were disappointed in the net revenue.
Plus, any time you start messing with haz-mat you enter a whole new world of regulatory compliance with resultant fees, penalties, record keeping, and deadlines for late submittal. They don't cut anyone any slack at all.
