Well courtesy of a member here on the board (Native Dancer...thanks for the tip btw....:biggrin_25514:) I have discovered taking routes other than the Interstates. Some routes may be longer by a few miles but they seem less hectic and a have a heck of a lot better views.

So if you have a choice of taking an interstate or another route like a "two-laner", which do you prefer?

I prefer sticking to the big road, unless I can save a significant amount of miles going on the back roads. Why? Glad you asked...:biggrin_25526:
    1. If there happens to be any problems, they tend to become bigger problems on a 2 lane road in the middle of nowhere.
    2. The company uses select fuel stops, so I pretty much HAVE to run the Interstates...unless I wanna push.
    3. You may save a few miles on smaller roads, but in my experience, it takes quite a bit more time with the stop-n-go little towns, etc.
    4. Most importantly, on the interstates, you are much more likely to get a high amount of thigh shots during your day. Hey it may not be important from a business point of view, but I like it.:biggrin_25525:

In TX you find yourself running back roads quite a bit.The interstates just don't go where you need them to. i like to run back roads if I know it's a good route without too many stop lights

One of my more memorable "back road" experiences was in Iowa, waaayyyy out in the middle of nowhere, I got stuck in a huge line of traffic behind a.....house. Yep, a house. Seems they were moving it to be near a museum or some darn thing. Now, most Iowa back raods aren't that big to begin with, and then you add this old farm house relocation circus....yeah, it took a minute to get through that.
It was almost worth it being able to call in and tell dispatch that I was being detained, and didn't know what time I'd be there.
" What's the problem? Where are you?"
    "Behind a house."
    >>Picks up the phone from the floor<<
"Why are you behind a house?"

I know for a fact you don't want to be on any Nebraska or Iowa back roads anywhere near planting or harvest season!!! :biggrin_2552:

i love the architecture of the towns and scenery on the back roads when i have time. going thru some of those small towns can be quite interesting when a seemingly straight thru rd turns left right left right LOL

I like 2-laners, particularly if going that way will save some miles over sticking to the interstates. If it's a time crunch, I'll eat the out-of-routes and hammer on it, but usually I'd rather just avoid the traffic and look out the windows :)
