You know how you see "G.O.A.L." on so many mirrors? It's like that in the oilfield, but it's signage about maintaining three points of contact. So freakin' many people get hurt just trying to get out of the truck.

Or falling out of the truck while either coming down or going up. Was something that happened a lot back in the cab over days. Or slipping on wet or frozen ground around fuel islands.

While the chances of being the victim of a violent crime is elevated in urban areas. This does not mean you should drop your guard out in the sticks either. I can't remember the town but about 30 years ago a trucker was killed at a small-town bus station in NC. Just don't lose situational awareness. Get in and get out. This was how I did it as a driver and how I do it today retired.

You enter and exit your truck so often, it's very easy to get too comfortable. Then that one day when you leave your head in the sleeper, try to exit your truck and slip and fall trying to to get out. It doesn't seem like a long drop, but you slip and fall out, you hit something and it really hurts.

    You done good Lenny.

People get all wound up, usually over stupid, petty little things or a succession of stupid little things, and then they're more likely to lash out and do something stupid. Anyone in the vicinity could be a target of their anger/frustration at that moment.

With all the daily annoyances we encounter, something on your rig breaks, a tire goes, an airline leaks, something isn't ready the minute we pull in, someones not in their place when we need them, a machines broke down, we overslept on a tight schedule, whatever -

just imagine the day when truck drivers could be a little patient, or kind, or understanding just with other truckdrivers.

    Another minute? No problem.
    Need help? No problem.
You got trouble somewhere else and yer minds on that, instead of where yer at right here, right now? No problem, but maybe it'd be better to pull off and git yer mind right before you get back to driving.

It would be a start. And it starts with me, today.
    Anyone else?
