You sir....must have hard the dubious joy of playing with that ever-so-evil "open-grade" stuff....JEEZ..I HATE it...!

Both Granite & SRC blew it in the mix a couple of years ago. It would hang, hot...w/the gates OPEN.

Never had that pleasure.. Just seen it. I worked a quarry and hot plant with a ladder set up to move the hot mix into the tanks.. Operator fell asleep. Filed tanks filled ladder, burned up motor.. Operator wakes up.. It's like granite has just east of town. And guess who got to help clear out the ladder of now rather cold asphalt .. All I can say is fun fun fun.

Open Grade...is the new stuff that (as I understand ) has ground up rubber/tires, & cellulose in it. Wears better, more traction, quieter....and like paving with tootsie rolls for the driver. We douched the hell outta the boxes w/diesel ( big no-no ) & it was still a crap-shoot on IF it would hang in the box or gates....usually always on the gates as they drug thru the windrow.

    1. There's your first problem, I've yet to run into a per say broker who wasn't at least 1/2 way crooked.
    2. Way low, not sure what part of the country you are from. I wouldn't fire my truck up for that rate.
    3. When paving with dump trucks it varies from job to job. Some stuff you really go and blow, and other times say doing a lot of radiuses and approaches you'll have a lot of wait time, weather it be at the hot plant or at the paving job.

Asphalt don't stick to bad at all really, unless it's that rubberized sticky airport stuff. That stuff you'll want to use a lot of diesel on! Most of the time though just the release agent at the hot plant is enough to keep my box sliding out good.
An electric tarp may be a good idea they help keep the heat in a little bit while you're waiting, but then again millions of miles of road have been paved without em.
Most importantly though stay square to the paver, don't pull away from it, and don't get bound up and tear up the prep work. That #### pisses off the paving crew and makes you not come back.
Also for the 1-2 hours of work it'll take I'd weld on a chipping bar. If you're doing a lot of paving chances are good there'll be a bit of chip sealing going on also.
